Smock Alley

Built in 1662 as Ireland’s first Theatre Royal, Smock Alley is a restored 17th-century theatre building, located centrally in the oldest district of Dublin.

A restored 17th-century historical building in a city centre location, Smock Alley is an utterly unique venue, full of ornate impressive features ideal for weddings and civil ceremonies.

Built in 1662 as Ireland’s first Theatre Royal, the building was recreated as a Catholic Church in 1811 and in fact housed the first Catholic church bell to toll in Dublin for over 300 years.

Smock Alley Theatre must be experienced to be understood as the perfect place to celebrate your wedding.

The stained-glass-windowed Banquet Hall is a spacious and ornate place along the banks of the Liffey, and boasts an ornate plasterwork ceiling, plastered walls and stained-glass windows from the theatre’s time as a church.

The space is versatile and easy to change, simple enough to add your own details but with such interesting and striking features, it could easily be left as is with just some added simple touches.

The Banquet Hall is HSE licensed for Civil Ceremonies and Partnerships. If you wish to hold your ceremony there, they provide church-style pew seating and benches for up to 100 guests, top table, lighting, and sound equipment.

The acoustics for music is unparalleled and it is fully licensed, so you and up to 150 guests can wed and celebrate until 11pm.

Smock Alley also offers the option of hosting a drinks reception with canapés/finger food if required.

Plus, the cobblestones of Cow’s Lane make for quite the photo backdrop!

Testimonials

We could not have been happier with our wedding in Smock Alley. From day one they were so helpful. The banquet hall is a beautiful, romantic venue, the stained glass windows and ornate ceiling are really a sight to behold. Sarah and her staff are wonderful and did a great job of making our day feel special even with only six guests at our wedding. They even let us use some of the theatre's audio visual equipment to stream the wedding ceremony to our family who couldn't be there. The guests are still talking about it!
