Lots of ideas for decoration for your wedding cake, from classical bride and groom wedding cake toppers, to animals and crafty DIY's...

So ordinarily I'm not a cake person, more of a savoury fan to be honest, but I do love the creativity people are going to with their wedding cakes these days! A wedding reception wouldn't be complete without the ceremony of cutting the cake and you can make this part a little bit more personal with a fun and personalised cake topper? This is an opportunity to incorporate your own personal style in a very simple and inexpensive way. So we've had a look around and selected various wedding cake toppers (yes, that's what they're called) from lots of sources catering for every style from fun or alternative to elegant and traditional. They are available to buy if you'd rather the professionals created one for you, but there are also lots of simple (I promise) DIYs to choose from...

From way back when wedding cakes started the tradition was to pop a bride and groom statue on top, nowadays you can take that tradition but make it your own and a lot more pretty and personal! Etsy is filled with people making custom illustrated cake toppers.

Novelty Cake Toppers- How cute are they? | onefabday.com

Weddings well and truly are a way of expressing yours and your partners personalities and you can do that through many elements, a simple way  is the through a cake topper. If you like movies and your favourite is Pixar's Up (doesn't everybody love that one!) You can take an icon element of the movie like the armchairs, we found this cute example on Want That Wedding. Wooden people toppers  are so cute and you can buy your own kits at My DIY Day or alternatively have one custom-made from Lollipop Workshop. Birds have always been popular and now you can dress them up too, like these cuties we saw on Wedding Chicks.  Last but not least a favourite idea of mine is the Polaroid topper, quick, easy and super effective! We found this beauty on Brides.com photographed by Beth Armsheimer.

Balloon Cake Topper | onefabday.com

Balloons are another easy (and cost effective) cake topper that you can make yourself.

From pretty hot air balloon toppers like the one  we found over on Peppermint Sundays or the different coloured mini water balloons on wooden sticksfrom Martha Stewert, you can find the DIY for this one over at Martha Stewert Craft Projects. A personal favourite of mine is the balloon animal topper, simple and sweet all at once, we found this yellow doggy over at Studio DIY and you can find the DIY here! The trio of balloons is a simple way to create height with your cake topper we found this pink, green and red one at Wedding Chicks.

Sign CakeToppers | onefabday.com

Last but certainly not least is the sign cake topper. A sign cake topper gives you lots of freedom to choose meaningful wording or sweet Mr & Mrs lettering. It can be simple and chic or sparkly and full of glitter and extra decor. There are loads of styles available and if your crafty yourself you can make your own.

Steps for DIY

  • Choose a font you like using Photoshop or Microsoft Word you can create a sign template.
  • Type the wording for example 'Hurray' or 'Best Day Ever', design it so it is slightly touching so that when you go and cut it out it isn't separate words.
  • Print onto card and (carefully) using a scalpel blade cut of the words.
  • Neatly tape the sign to 2x wooden sticks (which you can buy in any craft shop) cut to desired height and your done!

If you'd rather leave it to the professionals you can buy the 'Best Day Ever' Sign over at Paper Treats via Etsy.com, the pretty 'Just Married' paper stencil is from Alex Mattox Design, the hilarious 'For Like Ever' topper from Oh Deir Living at Etsy and the 'Love' cake topper is available from The Pink Owl Gifts via Etsy.
