7 Bucket List Things to Do on Honeymoon in Bora Bora

Helicopter rides and skinny dipping

A trip to Bora Bora is probably something that's already on your bucket list if you're going there on honeymoon. But seeing as you're travelling all that way, why not make it count? Snorkel over a coral reef, swim with sharks, drink cocktails while you watch shooting stars, and go parasailing over volcanos.

Some people think a paradise island honeymoon will be boring, but today, we're going to prove it's anything but. We've rounded up seven of the most fun, unique, bucket list-worthy things to do on honeymoon in Bora Bora. Make sure you tick at least a couple of them off your list for your honeymoon is out.

1. Stay in an Overwater Bungalow

If you read our guide to honeymoon resorts in Bora Bora, you'll know that overwater bungalows are the accommodation de rigueur in French Polynesia. Overwater bungalows have been synonymous with the island since they were first built by the iconic Hotel Bora Bora in the sixties.

While they are often among the most expensive rooms in any Bora Bora resort, if your budget can stretch to it, do try to stay in an overwater villa for at least one or two nights of your trip - if only to have your room service delivered to you by canoe!

2. Swim with Turtles

Turtles in Bora Bora

Bora Bora with its pristine waters and coral teaming with life, is a renowned diver's paradise. You can opt for snorkelling if you're a novice or scuba diving if you prefer to go a little deeper under water. Most resorts in Bora Bora will offer boat trips or diving lessons, or of course you could simply jump off the pontoon with your snorkelling gear and see what you discover.

While swimming with turtles in Bora Bora is pretty special (and not too scary), you can also find sharks, rays, and coral gardens filled with vividly-coloured fish. For more information, visit viator.com

3. Catch a Shooting Star

Stargazing in Bora Bora

Stargazing in Bora Bora might not sound like a bucket list-worthy endeavour, but the night sky in French Polynesia is pretty spectacular.

There are companies that offer star-gazing cruises at night, but if you're looking for the ultimate in honeymoon romance, I think it would be far nicer to grab a bottle of bubbly (or a couple of cocktails) and find a secluded section of beach to take in the stars alone with your other half.

4. Have a Massage on the Beach

Can you think of anything more fabulous than lying side by side with your new husband or wife, having a relaxing massage, with the breeze in your hair and the sound of the ocean lapping nearby?

No, me neither. Bora Bora resorts offer all manner of blissful treatments in beautiful surroundings, so make sure you set time on your honeymoon aside (from all the hammock swinging and cocktail drinking) to indulge in some R&R of the professional kind.

5. Go Skinny Dipping in a Lagoon

Okay so you don't have to go starkers for this one, (unless you're 100% sure a tour boat isn't going to sail around the corner!) but what every big trip needs is a 'pinch me' moment and Bora Bora is full of them. Among the most stunning nooks of the island and its surrounding enclaves are the tropical lagoons, insanely beautiful, romantic, and often rather secluded.

Grab your other half, and some paddle boards or a kayak, and find your own little piece of paradise all of your own.

6. Climb a Volcano

Hiking in Bora Bora

Well technically, the island of Bora Bora itself is an extinct volcano, but it does have two pretty spectacular peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu. While both are quite the hike, (it's about a six hour return trip), the iconic views (and the bragging rights) are worth the honeymoon exercise.

Views don't come much more epic than this -  Mount Pahia in particular offers a 360-degree panorama. It's highly advised you recruit a guide for this one though, as the trail is in parts unmarked and hard to follow.

7. See Bora Bora from the Sky

Parasailing in Bora Bora

Parasailing or taking a helicopter ride is a worthy of a spot on anyone's bucket list, but parasailing in Bora Bora or taking in the South Pacific from a helicopter, well, that's pretty phenomenal indeed.

There are several companies offering birds-eye views over the island, so chat to your resort about which ones they'd recommend - as many tour companies don't have a great online presence, it tends to be easier to book once you arrive.
