There's so much to talk about in today's real wedding, that we honestly don't know where to start! Cathy and Jimmy's love story began with a chance encounter on a beach, progressed with a rom com-worthy moment in - where else!? - the local pub, and, years later found them tying the knot at an infinitely stylish wedding at The Village Barn at Tyrrellspass. With their gorgeous boys, 6-year-old OisÃn and 3-year-old Tadhg, in tow, and surrounded by friends and family members, they brought a taste of DIY boho style to one of Ireland's coolest wedding venues, and, as you might expect, the imagery by Kyrstin Healy Photography is simply sensational!
Before we go any further, we've got to talk about Cathy's incredible bridal two-piece, which she actually found on Instagram! "I left a comment on the post, saying that the dress was amazing, and I wished I lived in California so I could buy one from the shop. The brand, Dreams and Lovers, replied and said that they could help. From there, I chose the style I loved, they sent me a sample dress, and then made my dress to measure. They were amazing to deal with. When it arrived, I had lost some weight and it was too big, but thankfully the gorgeous Celine at All Alterations in Dublin 8 saved the day and altered it perfectly."
Cathy and Jimmy tell us that they met on a beach in Thailand 16 years ago. "I was with my friends and Jimmy was with his, and, with Ireland being so small, we had a good few acquaintances in common. So we all decided to meet up for drinks later that night, although no romance happened." Six years later, their paths crossed again on St. Stephen's night in Hayden's Bar in Naas. "Something was in the air that night," Cathy remembers, "because I said to my cousin, 'I've been all around the world, wouldn't it be hilarious if I met the love of my life in Hayden's?' and we both had a good laugh about it. As soon as the words left my mouth, I turned around and there was Jimmy."
Jimmy popped the question in 2017, on a trip to Marrakesh to celebrate Cathy's birthday. "We were sat in the Yves Saint Laurent gardens, enjoying the beautiful surroundings, when I noted that Jimmy looked a bit grey. I asked if he was OK, and he said he was fine, he just needed to go to the bathroom. I was sat on my own for ages, wondering what was going on, when a very nervous Jimmy returned, got down on one knee and asked, 'Will you marry me?' Of course, I replied with a resounding yes!"
The couple incorporated lots of beautiful DIY elements into their day, beginning with the ceremony! "Jimmy made the huge dreamcatcher as a present for me, and we made the handfasting chord with our sons. We all chose different ribbons to symbolise different things and braided them together, adding special charms."
From day one, Cathy and Jimmy wanted their wedding day to be laid-back and relaxed. "The vibe we went for was boho and earthy, Californian style in Westmeath," Cathy says. "We really wanted to be outside for as much as possible, but needed to find somewhere that had an inside option available, as it's Ireland and the weather is so unpredictable."
You know we love an oversized floral moment here at One Fab Day, so we were always going to be huge fans of Cathy's gorgeous floral headpiece. "I found it on Etsy," she tells us. "I knew I wanted a big floral crown with feathers, and Flora and The Fox did an amazing job making it."
Cathy tells us that, from her first chat with Peter from The Village Barn, she knew it was the venue for them. "He totally got our vision and was on the same page about being chilled and laid-back. We went down to visit the next week and they were still finishing off the venue, but we had total faith that it would all be amazing by the time we had our big day the following year. To be honest, the venue surpassed our dreams by the time it was done."
It sounds like the gamble paid off for this pair! "David and all of the staff at Willies and The Barn couldn't have done more for us and worked so hard to ensure the day went well. They were all fabulous. The food was scrumptious and there was no shortage of it all. All of our guests were blown away by the venue, food and drinks and the lovely staff."
We are head over heels in love with Cathy's wild-looking, rose-filled bouquet by O'Reilly Flowers!
The couple brought a little bit of the California desert to the Village Barn, which looked absolutely incredible on the day. "When we started making the décor and asking around for skulls, there were a few raised eyebrows," Cathy says. "But I think everyone was pleasantly surprised by the flowers and skulls and dreamcatchers."
Cathy's advice to engaged couples is to focus on what's important to you both, and don't fret too much about the rest! "Other people won't notice if all your little details don't get done. We had a few things that didn't happen and really it didn't matter in the end."
After the wedding, Cathy and Jimmy went to The Bloomfield House Hotel in Mullingar with their two boys for a short break. "The grounds, lake and pool were just what we needed, but we had to be back to work and school the week after the wedding, so could only manage a few days away. We're going to Iceland next summer with the boys for a family honeymoon, and also hope to fit in a little trip away to somewhere warm, just two of us, and finally get our honeymoon."
There were literally too many gorgeous details in this wedding to fit in a single feature, so we thought it best to include the full set of images in the gallery below. Click through for a look! Before we wrap things up, we've got to say a huge thank you to Cathy and Jimmy for sharing their big day with us, and to Kyrstin Healy for providing the beautiful photographs.
