Tips for Hiring Furniture for your Wedding

Shop around - The cost of hiring chairs and tables can vary wildly, so make sure you get several quotes before you commit to one company.

Always ask the venue - Always check what your venue has before hiring furniture, they may already have something that meets your needs. It's also a good idea to let them know in advance that you intend to hire furniture, in case they need a storage solution for the chairs and tables they'd ordinarily use for events.

Think about set-up - Some tables in particular will take a while to set up, and of course, once they're in place, they'll need to be dressed, decorated and set, so you need to leave lots of time for set-up. If possible, ask your venue about having your tables delivered the day before - and make sure someone is there to receive them.

Ask about delivery fees and regions - Before you make a booking, double check the delivery fees for your area as they could add up, and make sure the company will deliver to your venue.

Functionality as well as style - We're all for cool benches and chic long tables, but make sure you're giving your guests enough elbow room to sit and eat. Ensure any older guests or those with back problems will be comfortable. And check that there will enough room on the table for the kind of centrepieces or decor you have in mind.

Choose pieces that don't require dressing - This one both saves money, and gives your wedding a modern vibe, but hire tables and chairs that don't need linens or chair covers and you'll get to show them off and save on further rentals. If you're using antique tables though - check with your hire company that it's okay not to cover them.

Check the seating pad colours - you might not think it makes much difference, but when you're talking about 100 chairs, a dark or bold coloured seating pad can make a big impact on the room.

Do the maths, then do it again - As well as checking you've enough room for everyone to sit, make sure the tables you order will fit into the space as you've planned - take that from someone who learned the hard way! (Me!).

Check the legs - This might seem silly, but check the legs of any tables you hire to see how many people you can fit at a table. The reason trestle tables work so well is that their narrow, fold-out legs don't get in the way if a guest is seated where two tables meet. But with a rustic dining table or picnic bench you may need to leave gaps between guests to set them comfortably.

Hire in the professionals - If you're stressed-out by the idea of sourcing, and potentially setting-up all the furniture for your wedding, hire a planner or a stylist. They know what they're doing, they have a best contacts, and they can often secure you a great price on rentals.
