The Best Sunday Roast Spots in Dublin

Sunday Roasts in Dublin The Old Spot 2
The Old Spot

1. The Old Spot

A cosy and - dare we say it? - elegant gastropub on the south side of town, The Old Spot is perfect for an up-market hangover lunch, particularly when everyone in your party is an enthusiastic meat eater (although for vegetarians and pescatarians, there are lots of tempting non-roast dishes). Choose between beer-roasted free range chicken, with sausage, sage and onion stuffing (€26) and Pat McLoughlin's dry-aged sirloin of beef (€28), both of which are served with duck fat roast potatoes, roast carrots, cauliflower cheese and red wine jus.

57 The Headline

2. 57 The Headline

A two-course Sunday roast will set you back €28 at 57 The Headline, but it'd be rude not to sample something from the refreshingly unpretentious cocktail menu while you're at it. This beloved craft beer pub puts an international spin on the traditional Sunday roast with options like calamari and house cooked wings, and the main event is seriously luxurious, featuring celeriac purée and tarragon cream sauce along with staples like Yorkshire pudding and onion gravy. This is not Sunday lunch as your granny used to make it!

The Exchequer

3. The Exchequer Wine Bar

A modern tapas restaurant that also happens to do terrific cocktails is an unexpected place to find one of the best roasts in Dublin but it's always in high demand. Priced between €84.95 and €99.95 for four people, including a bottle of house wine, choose from rib of beef or roast chicken and rest assured that the trimmings are top notch.  The best addition to this menu is the new whole roast suckling pig, served as it would be in chef Jose Gomez's native Spain. You'll need to pre-order your roast by Friday, (or a week in advance for the pig) but the idea of crispy potatoes and buttery green beans should be all the motivation you need to pick up the phone.

4. FX Buckley

Known for the quality of its meats, everything is cooked in Josper charcoal ovens. This gives the meat the smoky sweetness of the charcoal, while the high temperatures creates a hint of crispiness. Roast rib of beef, Yorkshire pudding, creamy mash, duck fat roast potatoes, confit shallots, roast carrots and tenderstem broccoli with roast gravy will set you back €19.50.We highly advise adding a Bloody Mary, which is made with a blend of spicy F.X. Buckley seasoning, tomato juice, fresh lemon and vodka (€8).

Rum-soaked ham with hasselback potato... we thought that would get your attention! Pair this with cauliflower cheese, wild garlic champ, citrus and cumin carrot and celeriac with parsley sauce and it's obvious this is no ordinary roast. Then there's the roast loin of pork with chorizo, vegan wellington... the list goes on! As it's a pub, you'll be enjoying you fare in dimly lit conditions, but as there are pints on offer too maybe it'll be just the cure you need.

7. The Paddocks

A buzzy neighbourhood pub with a much fawned-over carvery lunch, The Paddocks is also home to the one of the city's best vegan Sunday roasts! While pork, turkey, beef and bacon (from €16.95) are, of course, on the menu, their beef and turkey joint-style vegan roasts, served with sage stuffing, olive oil mash, red wine gravy and a wealth of vegetables make it one of the most inclusive spots on our list.
