Sunshine Wedding at Field of Dreams: Leigh & Danielle

A laid-back summer wedding with great style and DIY details

Whether the sun shines or it buckets down on your big day, you're guaranteed to have the best day ever. But when you've planned a party in a field, with stunning views, hay bales and ice-pops at the ready, some good weather certainly helps set the tone! Which is why we're chuffed that DIY bride and groom Danielle and Leigh got such a scorcher for today's real wedding at Field of Dreams, in Bangor, Northern Ireland. This stylish couple let their creative juices run free with the details, with everything from homegrown centrepieces to homemade stationery to wow their guests. Ross Murphy Photography captured their gorgeous day in the sun!

Leigh tells us how he and Danielle initially got together. “A shared love of pickled onion Monster Munch started a interesting chat about crisps and that was it all took for Danielle to ask me out! Although she always denies this…”

The couple had something of a sign of things to come on their first date. “After going bowling, we went to a bar on our first date for a drink, a local band played a song for us to be played at our wedding (awkward at the time) but three and a half years later and it was indeed played at our wedding!” Talk about fate!

Loving Danielle's chic updo, paired with a flower crown it gives an elegant, boho vibe to her stunning off-the-shoulder wedding dress. What a stunner!

Leigh proposed to Danielle while the couple were away together in Vienna. “At the Schonbrunn Palace overlooking Vienna,” the groom explains. “We went to the Vienna Zoo in the morning and before going back to our hotel, we stopped on a hill to admire the view, where I popped the question to Danielle’s surprise.”

“She was surprised because she had already looked through my backpack to see if I was indeed going to propose, but I had hidden the ring in the safe at the hotel and not told her the combination!” Leigh tells us about the near-scuppered proposal. “We went for a nice dinner to celebrate at an Italian restaurant where we where given a whole floor to ourselves.”

The couple got married under a trellis built by Leigh’s father. “It’s now in our garden along with our centrepieces, flamingo trees which we grew and looked after. They give us something to remember from the day.”

The couple say they were eager to be involved in every aspect of their wedding, “That is why we did a lot of things ourselves like the invites, flowers, decorating the venue to the style and feel we wanted. We wanted a very casual country vintage style theme.”

On the day, this pair had a scorcher, with 28 degrees and sunshine, “The day was very relaxed and everyone had a great time. The venue was very picturesque with the lake and lots of quirky places for photos.”

Always a good idea to have to activities or toys on the go for the kids.

These two look so happy! The couple had two vintage VWs for the day to help transport themselves and their wedding party.

Classic champagne mishap!

The couple were blown away by the setting and atmosphere at Field of Dreams. The scenery around the venue was amazing, from the marquee, to the barn and all the quirky places around like the jetty. It was also the perfect size and feel for the vibe we wanted for our day- we didn’t want it looking or feeling too formal.”

The couple wanted to make sure the celebration felt like their own, “…And to make sure that the day was going to be enjoyed by us and all of our family and friends. We didn’t really involve anyone in the planning of the wedding or let anyone help us because we wanted it to be a surprise for everyone to see the effort and all the personal touches that we either made, designed or had planned for the day.”

This pair are really doing the name of their venue justice!

Leigh designed a printed all the stationery himself, and had the cake topper he designed laster cut by a colleague in the school technology department. Danielle made all the buttonholes herself.

The had me at 'Burger Station'.

Leigh and Danielle have a few nuggets to pass on to other couples. “Work out your budget to suit what you want and try to stick to it, you would be amazed at what you can do with a little creativity and time, and we enjoyed doing some of these things together. Don’t let anyone tell you or suggest what you should be doing or what is traditional at a wedding, it’s your wedding and it’s your day so make it special for you first and foremost.”

You know we're pretty partial to a doughnut wall!

The couple made the most of getting married in the height of summer, “We were able to use the hot weather and have hay bales, ice pops etc. which made our guests relax outside and enjoy the views and craic.”

The couple jetted off to the Amalfi Coast for their honeymoon, stopping at Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, and Positano along the way.”

Thanks so much to Danielle and Leigh for sharing your spectacular day with us. And of course so beautifully captured by Ross Murphy Photography!
