As the days get darker and the nights get colder, there's something so comforting about having a beloved TV show to indulge in, and they don't come any more beloved than Sex and the City! We couldn't help but think about all the jaw-droppingly gorgeous bridal moments that Carrie and company delivered over the past 23 years. Of course, when we think of a Sex and the City wedding dress, Carrie's voluminous Vivienne Westwood gown is the first to spring to mind, and it even made a reappearance in And Just Like That... but there were plenty of others along the way, not to mention all the ivory party dresses and chic suits that would make incredible bridal looks in any era! Ready to see them? Let's go!
Every Bridal Fashion Moment in Sex and the City
1. Carrie's Vivienne Westwood Wedding Dress
Of course, we had to start with the ultimate Sex and the City wedding dress, a spectacularly large and expectedly bold, strapless couture gown by Vivienne Westwood, which costume designer Patricia Field paired with a dramatic teal feather headpiece for Carrie's ill-fated first wedding to Big. The wedding may not have gone ahead as planned, but the look will continue to inspire brides for decades!
2. Carrie's Vintage Wedding Suit
For her New York City Hall wedding to Big, Carrie famously wore an unlabelled skirt suit that she found in a vintage shop, which was actually an ivory version of a Galliano for Christian Dior suit from their 2008 resort collection. Teamed with the iconic blue Manolo Blahnik heels that Big proposed with, it made for a simple, yet thoroughly ravishing bridal look!
3. Carrie's Vogue Shoot Wedding Dresses
In what is surely among the most fabulous movie montages of all time, Carrie starred in a Vogue photo shoot wearing couture wedding dresses by Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Lanvin (pictured above), Dior, Oscar de la Renta, and, of course, Vivienne Westwood. All six dresses are outrageously gorgeous and worthy contenders for your bridal mood board, but the short, pleated Lanvin number, paired with a retro flyaway veil, is a personal favourite, it's a super sweet look for a city or registry office wedding!
4. Charlotte's Vera Wang Wedding Dress
For her first wedding to Trey, Charlotte donned the ultimate Park Avenue Princess dress, a strapless, lace appliqué gown by Vera Wang, styled in suitably epic fashion with a cathedral-length veil. While it certainly has a classic feel, this look would just just as beautiful today, particularly in an epic, castle wedding venue.
4. Charlotte's Badgley Mischka Wedding Dress
For her second wedding to Harry, Charlotte chose a super romantic, lace-trim, bias-cut gown by Badgley Mischka, which she paired with a shoulder-length veil and long diamond earrings. It's a sophisticated, grown-up take on bridal style and it's easily one of our favourite looks from the whole series!
5. Miranda's Velvet Suit
Never one to go with tradition, Miranda chose a rust-coloured, tailored velvet skirt suit to marry Steve. Designed by Patricia Field, it's an unconventional choice for sure, but a gorgeous one for an alternative bride, particularly one getting married in Autumn!
6. Carrie's Tuxedo
Playing the role of Best Man at Stanford and Anthony's wedding, Carrie dons a tailored version of a menswear staple, a classic black tuxedo by costume designer Patricia Field, topping it off with a black lace crown. It's a bold look for sure, but one that would suit a fashion-forward bride.
7. Carrie's "Hubbell" Dress
It's no coincidence that Carrie was wearing a slinky, ivory silk slip dress when she ran into Big outside his engagement party. While a little daring for all but the most relaxed of weddings, it would make the coolest hen party, night-before or day-two wedding look!
8. Carrie's Eugene Alexander Dress
Although worn on a shopping trip, as opposed to a wedding day, Carrie's asymmetrical flower dress delivers such outrageously gorgeous bridal inspiration for a cutting-edge bride. Designed by Eugene Alexander for Whitney Houston to wear in a 1987 photo shoot, the original dress was shortened to mini-skirt length for the movie. It's also proof, if ever it was needed, that a statement accessory can make an outfit!
9. Carrie's Charity Benefit Dress
When Carrie wears a fitted, strapless white gown to Richard's black tie charity benefit, it prompts Aidan to suggest they head to Las Vegas and elope, much to Carrie's horror! The relationship may not have lasted, but the dress, teamed with statement earrings and a sculptural updo, is perfection.
10. Carrie's Richard Tyler Dress
A floaty, romantic number featuring one of our favourite bridal trends, delicate floral prints, this Richard Tyler number unfortunately ended up in a lake in Season 3 of the show! But we think it delivers serious inspiration for modern brides, for night-before dinners or day-two parties if not the main event.
11. Carrie's Chanel Suit
In sharp contrast to Carrie's black tuxedo above, this Chanel skirt suit is a really sweet and feminine take on bridal tailoring. The short gloves only add to the retro feel of this look!
12. Samatha's Wedding Dress
Don't remember Samantha getting married? That's because she didn't! Kim Cattrall decided to fool the press by parading around the streets of New York during filming of Sex and the City 2 in a wedding gown, which Patricia Field sourced for her in 40 minutes flat! Although it was only worn once for the sake of Kim's publicity stunt, the slinky lace wedding dress is undoubtedly gorgeous, and deserving of a fancier pair of shoes than the UGGs Kim stepped out in!
13. Carrie's Wedding Dress Reimagined
Rummaging through her closet with the mission of finding something to wear to the Met Gala, Carrie unearths her instantly recognisable Vivienne Westwood wedding dress at the beginning of the second season of And Just Like That... Perfectly tying in with the event's Veiled Beauty theme, the style icon put a fresh spin on her original bridal ensemble by adding vibrant pops of teal and a phenomenal birdcage veil.
