Fun down on the Farm - Jen and Jamie's Summer Shindig

All the fun of a farm wedding - Jen and Jamie's amazing day at Rumbold's Farm is a super inspiration for those looking to create a rustic wedding celebration...

I think more than a few of you are going to be inspired by today's real wedding feature about the amazing day of Jen and Jamie - this celebration was a real labour of love. The couple are each designers - Jen is a textile artist and Jamie is a graphic designer, so it's no surprise that this wedding is absolutely bursting with creativity and personality. The couple chose to celebrate in an outdoor ceremony and party at Rumbold’s Farm in West Sussex last Summer. They were blessed with gorgeous weather all day, so all their hard work paid off and they and their guests enjoyed a fantastic celebration to crown a wonderful love story. They recruited great friend Sarah Gawler to capture all the happy moments, and it was a joy for her to oblige, and a joy for us to share it with you today...

They met when they moved into a shared house together in Greenwich, a shared love of design means this couple are a match made in heaven.

Jen's dress is a real showstopper, a 100% original and one-of-a-kind piece - not many brides can say that, but this is guaranteed. The reason  is that Jen collected antique doilies from her family and Jamie's, these family heirlooms were brought together and formed into a beautiful handmade wedding gown by Debi Little, creating a new heirloom for Jen and Jamie's new family.

"Being a textile designer I asked Debbi Little, who works at the same studio as me to help create my dress. I didn’t want to be sweltering in layers or cinched in to a corset so she used old cotton lace tablecloths and doilies collected from my family and from Jamie’s to create the perfect style. I know exactly where every piece of lace came from, so it’s an heirloom I’ll treasure.”

Three of Jen’s four bridesmaids also wore Debbi Little signature dresses, made from hand-dyed recycled Fifties parachutes. “We mixed the colours from lipstick red and electric fuchsia to acid bright olive and soft dove grey. My bridesmaids looked like flowers and I smile every time I look at the photos.”

How phenomenal are these bouquets? You will never guess - they're homemade! “My mum did all the flowers, arranging a mix of flowers and greenery  to look like they had just been picked from a field. We got them from a wonderful wholesale flower market in Brighton. We had flowers absolutely everywhere, mum made huge displays in old watering cans, tin buckets and zinc florists' containers to dot around the venue, and decorated the tables with country garden flowers in vintage cut-glass mustard pots.”

Not to be outdone on the style stakes, Jamie also had the handmade touch in his groom's ensemble, ordering a bespoke shirt from Henry Herbert in London to complement his suit from Jaeger. "If you want beautiful tailoring, Charlie at Henry Herbert is your man for proper, old-school customer service. He even had my shirt biked from London to Sussex because we ordered it too late!”

Given Jen and Jamie are both designers, it's no surprise that they created most of the wedding decor themeselves - for the stationery they used recycled brown paper, tags and envelopes for the invitations, place names and menus.“Our stationery made from recycled paper had a bit of a country and western look which we thought was fun as we were getting married on a farm surrounded by horses, we also gave out drinks vouchers that looked like tokens for funfair rides.”

Guests were treated to handmade notebooks from Jen's own design range - the bright happy colours and floral prints fitting perfectly with the theme of the day.

In keeping with the vintage theme the table plan was created using vintage travel trunk, with names pegged on twine with wooden pegs.“We named our tables after places that have played a special part in our relationship, like No.57, which was the house where we first met in Greenwich, and The North Pole — the pub where we had our first kiss.”

Getting married on a farm certainly provided plenty of pretty out of the way corners for the couple to escape to for their portraits. Utterly romantic...

“A fabulous band called The KB Fussionaires kept the party going till past 11,” says Jen, “then we all walked down to a field where we had a huge bonfire and everyone camped, including us in our honeymoon suite pop-up tent adorned with fairy lights!

Congratulations Jen and Jamie! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful day on the farm with us - completely inspiring. And to Sarah Gawler a huge thank you too - delighted to feature Sarah's work for the first time today. Make sure and pop over to www.sarahgawler.co.uk  to see lots more of her dreamy work...
