I'm a sucker for old-school romance, the kind you often see in a black-and-white movie but rarely happens in real life... or so I thought! Today's real wedding may have changed my mind! Valene and Jason had the most movie-worthy proposal (Paris... at Christmas... in the rain!), and a wedding day to match! Their Dublin City Hall wedding was all about celebrating the love - even the smallest details had sentimental meaning! - and the restaurant reception in Marco Pierre White was effortlessly elegant to boot! Annie Kheffache was there to capture the magic, so let's take a closer look...
Valene and Jason met during a sun-drenched game of wheelchair basketball. "I knew from the moment I saw him that there was something special between us," she tells us. "For anyone who does not understand wheelchair basketball, there's a points classification that allows able-bodied players to play, meaning both able-bodied people and people who have a disability can play the sport together, making it really inclusive."
There was serious chemistry flowing on that basketball court, but it took a while for the relationship to kick off in earnest. "We grew closer in friendship and closer as team mates," Valene explains. "Jason finally asked me out on a date, taking me out for a beautiful dinner and a romantic show. Everything was so easy and felt right and still does five years later! I didn’t think it was possible to grow further in love with someone yearly, but it is." Aaand here come the waterworks!
Jason's proposal couldn't have been more romantic - he popped the question in Paris at Christmas time. "We flew into Paris the day before Christmas Eve for four nights. It was beautiful! The Christmas markets were stunning! Christmas Eve came and we got up that morning and decided to take in all the sights. That evening, we walked up to the Pont Alexandre III bridge. As we headed towards the bridge, it rained so heavily, we got saturated. It was actually really funny!"
When they reached the bridge, the two soggy lovebirds stopped to take some photos of the Eiffel Tower. "I sat on Jason’s lap to take it all in and he give me a book he had put together with pictures of when we first met, our lives together and all the things we had done. It was unbelievable. At the back of it said, 'All that’s left to do now is ask you one more question...' The next page had a ring in it and said 'Will you marry me?' I cried my eyes out and said yes!"
How gorgeous does Valene look in her bridal finery!? We love her perfectly undone updo by Martina King!
A statement bridal shoe always gets my heart thumping!
From the beginning, Valene and Jason were determined not to lose sight of the meaning behind their wedding day - in fact, Valene describes her top priority as "marrying Jason!" She adds, "I know how that sounds, but that really was the priority for both of us."
Valene's niece and nephew served as flower girl and page boy on the big day and are certainly getting top marks for cuteness! This is the Baby Estella dress from Monsoon and it's a real heartbreaker.
The couple tell us that exchanging vows was a highlight. "'We both have encountered the lows that life had to offer us but together we have only known the highs'. Those words were a part of my vows and I truly meant it." Valene says. "We both wrote our own vows to really capture our feeling towards one and other, and to be in that moment when we exchanged them, was very surreal."
Valene and Jason's wedding day ended up exceeding all of their expectations. "The vibe was high energy and pure love," Valene tells us. "It really was like no feeling I have ever had before. Every cell in my body told me this was the right thing to do. I was so excited and happy, from the moment I woke until the moment we both went to bed. It was truly a very special day for both us and we were blessed to have our close family and friends to be there to share it with us."
We are loving Valene's bridesmaid's style! Dusty pink and glitter is always a pretty foolproof combo!
Dublin City Hall has so many stunning spots in which to take wedding portraits! "We loved the simplicity of both of our venues, but they still had the wow factor. We really wanted an intimate, relaxed wedding that was fun and easygoing for us and our guests and I certainly think we achieved that! With City Hall, it was the stunning architecture of the room that we fell in love with. Plus, the staff were amazing."
Valene's advice to couples approaching the big day is to "relax and enjoy every minute of it! Don’t worry about the small elements, as everything falls into place. More importantly, keep in mind why you are both doing this - because you love each other. That’s all that matters!"
For their honeymoon, Valene and Jason went to Canada and San Francisco, before driving down the West Coast to L.A. "We had the wedding of a lifetime and were blessed to have a honeymoon that matched it."
After the ceremony, the couple and their guests enjoyed an extravagant feast at Marco Pierre White. "We loved the the old school vibe," Valene says. "The food was outstanding and again the staff were amazing!"
Valene made sure to remember her beloved Mum, who sadly passed away when she was young, on her wedding day. "I placed my Mum's gold earrings in my head piece, so that she was guiding me down the aisle on the day. We also used her wedding china as centrepieces with flowers in them at the reception. I felt it was a nice way of remembering her, as the family recognised them when they sat down for their meals." What a gorgeous idea! It looks like the colours inspired the florals too!
Can't decide on a wedding cake style? You could always take a business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back approach, like these guys did!
I love that these guys are laughing in almost every picture - now that's the mark of an amazing wedding day! At this point we have to say thanks so much to Valene and Jason for letting us peek inside their big day, and to Annie Kheffache Photography for sharing the beautiful images.
