With A lot of Heart and Soul - Joana and Andre by De Alma e Coracao

Let's travel to Portugal for the wedding of Andre and Joana who were married at night, surrounded by twinkling lights and candles...

Continuing our transatlantic travels of the last couple of days, we're back in Europe this morning, for a fabulous wedding that I think is a first for One Fab Day, we travel to Portugal for the wedding of Andre and Joana who were married at night, surrounded by twinkling lights and candles. So romantic! They chose the Taberna das Almas in Lisbon to have their ceremony and the celebration afterwards, and decorated it in understated urban market chic - a mix of bits and pieces of their own, simple florals and some beautifully thought out details made this a magical celebration of a couple in love and we're delighted that the creative geniuses of De Alma e Coração have shared it with us...

Andre moved to Lisbon from Oporto for a job and a mutual friend introduced the pair, a couple of nights out did the trick and Andre and Joana got together in 2005. Skip forward a few years and the couple were living together in pre-marital bliss when a very important question was asked...

Andre proposed on Joana's birthday, she had just woken up and was still in her PJs but that didn't stop a man in love - Andre was already down on one knee, and the rest they say is history!

A wedding at night is a really unusual one by Irish standards, but if you're getting married in winter, it could be the perfect way to forgo those grey skies and bring added warmth and atmosphere to the day - just make sure you pick an amazing venue like this one! (have a look at our 100 Best Wedding Venues guide for some super places)

What made this super cool venue 'the one'... An old factory down town Lisbon, where you could decorate it as you wanted and with no ending time limitation. Can you ask for more!

What was important to you when you were planning your wedding? We wanted the wedding place to be down town, so people could just take a taxi and have fun without restrictions. Most of the guests were friends our age but a lot of family members as well, so we tried to compromise the traditional with modernity - and I think we made it!

There are so many elements to this wedding that appeal to young and old as the couple hoped. The mismatch of cutlery and plates with vintage glasswear gives the table setting so much character. By adding flowers and lace to the table setting magives the rustic factory interiors some femininity. And of course you got to love the vintage coca cola boxes and kick knack confectionery boxes...

What made the day really special and personal to you? Family and friends helped us a lot. The cake was baked by the grooms grandmother and mother, the playlist was made by all the guest’s, most of the wedding favours were collected by the grooms father, a bridesmaid took care of the bouquet, a friend performed the ceremony, most of the men had mustaches just because the Joana's into it. Can you make it more personal and unique then that?

The couple got every guest to choose a song on their RSVP card and compiled all of them, with a few additions of their own of course, into a brilliant reception playlist (wonder who asked for Gangnam Style?

Raffle tickets were given to guests as wedding favours you could get anything from toy guns, jam, poetry pocket books, and other stuff the couple had gotten from antique shops. Then the de alma e Coração team gave the final twist.
