Festive & Elegant: Poinsettia Wedding Ideas

Cost-effective, versatile and full of festive cheer!

When styling a Christmas wedding, it's possible to lean into the festive season and its palette, without going jingle all the way. And while mistletoe and holly are quintessentially Christmas, there's no beating the poinsettia to bring the wow factor. Also referred to as the Christmas star flower because of the shape of its leaves, these plants blossom in southern Mexico throughout the winter, but are also grown in Ireland and the UK for Christmas too. The poinsettia's huge, vibrant leaves or 'bracts', come in a variety of shades, such as ivory, pink, coral, and of course a deep red, which make them surprisingly versatile for your floral needs. Here, we bring you creative suggestions on how to use Christmas poinsettia wedding decor to style your winter wedding.

1. Festive Stationery

Adding a poinsettia illustration to your invites along with some winter berries and foliage is the perfect way to set the festive feel of your Christmas wedding from the first point of contact with your guests. Continue this design throughout your welcome signage, table names and ceremony booklet.

2. Ravishing Bouquets

Winter weddings lend themselves to rich reds and crisp whites, and the poinsettia can do both. As it's such a full flower, you get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of a statement poinsettia wedding bouquet. Why not have your bridal bouquet one colour and the bridesmaid bouquets in another?

3. Ceremony Decor

Potted poinsettias add warmth and pop of festive colour to your ceremony space, whether you use them as aisle ends, entrance or altar decor. The beauty of the poinsettia is that it fills a space easily especially when potted and arranged in tiers. Wrap the base of your poinsettia in foil or insert them in plant pots and arrange them with pillar candles in glass vases or lanterns for an extra magical touch!

Added bonus: These crimson or ivory beauties can be repurposed back at your reception space too. Take a look here at how to repurpose your wedding flowers and decor.

4. Statement Reception Decor

Potted poinsettas can create a magical corridor leading to your reception area or a backdrop that's perfect for photos. Alternatively, they make for wow hanging pieces.

5. Festive Table Decor

A cut poinsettia works beautifully within a floral arrangement, or potted plants are great for centrepieces, just add tapered candlesticks, tea lights, pine cones and foliage. Try individual miniature potted poinsettias at each place setting, which can also double as a sustainable favour.
