How to Change your Name after Marriage in Ireland

Once you have a marriage certificate, it's possible to change your surname without executing a deed poll. This means that, once you're married, you can go ahead and use your new surname. You new surname may be your spouse's surname, but it can also be your own surname and your spouse's surname, also known as a double-barrel surname. Your marriage certificate acts as your proof of the name change, so you should bring it with you when changing your name on the following;

Your Passport

To change your name on your passport, you must apply for a brand new passport, and submit your previous passport. This can take longer than a regular application and will cost you €75 for the passport book or €100 for both book and card.

Bank Account & Bank Cards

To change your name on your bank account and bank cards, you must visit your local branch with your marriage cert, and a valid form of photo ID. The name on your account can be changed right away, and a new card can be ordered for you once your details have been updated. You should be able to retain the same card number, but if you have direct debit payments, make sure and check that the number still matches.

For full details, contact your bank.

Public Services Card

Changing your name on other documents can be easier if you first change it with the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, so it's up-to-date on your Public Services Card. To do this following a marriage, you must submit Photo ID in your pre-marriage name (for example, your Public Services Card, passport or driving licence), and your marriage certificate.

You will need a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID, along with; proof of your address dated within the last six months if your current address differs from the one you provided when you applied for your PSC; proof that you are normally resident in Ireland if your place of birth and nationality are outside the EU/EEA; a fully-completed medical report form dated within one month, if required in your case. It's also possible to do all this via an appointment at an NDLS centre.
