Rugged and Elegant: Jonny and Katherine's Beachside Wedding

A thoroughly dreamy day on the North Atlantic coast!

The real wedding we're sharing today is such a stunner, not least because it took place on a clifftop overlooking the Atlantic ocean, at the dramatic Mussenden Temple! Jonny and Katherine had a really simple brief for their big day - to make it official in a happy, relaxed environment, surrounded by their closest friends and family members - and that's exactly what they did! While they made sure not to lose focus on the true meaning behind their day, their aesthetic details, including gorgeous, elegant wedding party looks and low-key dried flower arrangements, were expertly chosen. Tiffany Gage Photography has kindly shared the images from their day with us, so let's dive in!

Jonny tells us that he met Katherine through a mutual friend at a party in their first year of university. "We were introduced and spoke briefly, but Katherine was about to start her second year of Uni at Bournemouth and I was just about to leave for a year in Canada, so neither of us thought any more about it, until our paths crossed again, over a year later when we were both back home and out in Belfast. This sparked a conversation, and, after a few weeks of texting we were on our first date - the rest is history!"

For his proposal, Jonny took Katherine on a surprise weekend away. "I was told to bring myself and a passport!" she remembers. "We got through security when Jonny told me we were off to Oslo, and once we arrived, we got wrapped up and spent the day exploring the city. That evening, we went for a romantic meal by the seafront and afterwards, walked along the pier and sat with our legs dangling over the end. It was a clear night so you could see all the stars and there was a light show happening on the promenade behind us. Then Jonny got down on one knee and proposed with his grandmother's ring!"

The couple tell us that their wedding day was perfect from start to finish! "Having a day that felt like a celebration rather than a formal event was really important to us both, and Mussenden Temple was the dream venue. It perfectly catered for a ceremony that was intimate, relaxed and informal, with the people who mean the most to us."

How gorgeous is Katherine's romantic, bohemian bridal look!? She found her Jesus Peiro dress at The Bridal Boutique Warwickshire, where she also picked up her bridesmaids dresses - they're by Sorella Vita in the colour Sangria!

The couple tell us that their ceremony was their top priority for the big day. Katherine explains, "The most important thing for us was making our vows to each other in the presence of God while being surrounded by the people we love. We wanted to keep the ceremony intimate and focused on this, and for our day to be happy, relaxed and enjoyable for everyone."

It sounds like Mussenden Temple ticked all the boxes for this pair. Katherine says, "The views on the drive up are phenomenal and there are so many things to take your eye - the trainline on the cliffside below, a stunning span of Benone beach, the rugged cliffs and grassland surrounding the temple, the old ruins of Downhill house – and that’s all before you even step foot in the temple itself! 360° red brick interior and iconic bay windows meant we hardly had to add anything in terms of decorations – just a few flower arrangements and candles and it was perfect!"

Jonny and Katherine took inspiration from their venue when it came time to choose the aesthetic details for the day. Katherine tells us, "My dress, the colours, music, photography and flowers were all selected to match the mix of vintage and modern – rugged and elegant."

Covid-19 restrictions meant a lot of uncertainty for this pair in planning their wedding. "So being able to get ready with my immediate family, bridal party and oldest friends and having them all involved on the day felt like such a treat!" Katherine says. "Tiffany, our photographer, was a dream, and Davey Music gave me that magical movie moment of walking up the aisle – I’ll never forget it!"

Katherine tells us that she created most of the flower arrangements herself! "I made most of them in the few days before the wedding, which was stressful but entirely self-inflicted! I love that they look the part in the photos and that we can have them forever - they’re all dried or artificial."

Katherine's advice to engaged couples is to take things one step at a time. "It’s easy to feel like you need everything you see on Pinterest and the day can turn into a bit of a show, but what it boils down to is the two of you getting married. Don’t get tied down with tradition and what is maybe expected of a wedding - the less formal the better! And enjoy the day itself – so much time is spent planning and prepping, but on the day, you want to be able to set the logistics and worry aside, to be present and soak up what’s going on around you."

For their honeymoon, the couple took their blue VW campervan around the North Coast for a few days. "We stopped off at the Killyhevlin hotel for some pampering," Katherine says. "We spent the rest of the week based up in Donegal, driving around the Wild Atlantic Way checkpoints. It was our first time up in that part of the country and we would fully recommend!"

After the couple had their beachside wedding portraits taken, they hit the beach! Katherine tells us, "we headed down to Portstewart strand, where the wedding party and a few of our close friends had fish and chips (with a bottle of champagne!) on the beach. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and for once in Northern Ireland, it wasn’t raining!"

Thanks so much to Jonny and Katherine for sharing their gorgeous Mussenden Temple beachside wedding with us, and to Tiffany Gage for providing the beautiful imagery! There are even more photographs to swoon over in the gallery below.
