They say you can meet your soul mate anywhere... and today's wedding proves the old cliche - Laura and David met in a hostel in Canada. That hostel held lots of firsts for Laura and David. Their first encounter, first coffee date, and even their first kiss! This beautiful ceremony was filled with so much love from all their friends and family. You won't want to miss a single detail of this wedding captured by the very talented Art Wedding Photography...
7 years ago, Laura and David’s paths crossed by pure chance. Laura was traveling alone from Australia and David was driving across Canada with some friends when they ended up meeting in the kitchen of a small hostel in Kelowna, Canada. Laura tells us…“From the instant we met, there was a sense that we would have a big impact in each other’s lives, although the role wasn’t immediately clear. We started as friends with our regular morning coffees; teaching each other to cook and hours of endless chatting on the blue couch on the back deck of the hostel. These shared experiences evolved and we soon became each other’s best friend and rock in the otherwise dynamic environment of hostel life. I left town for a few days to visit a friend in Vancouver (thankfully) because it was then that Dave came to the conclusion that I was perhaps more than just the friend he’d found in the hostel.”
"Not long after my return from Vancouver, we shared a kiss on that blue couch on the back deck of the hostel and haven’t looked back. The subsequent 7 years have been spent by each other’s side, filled with laughter, adventure, friendship and fun. Our first big adventure was a 7-week American road trip in a van called Molly with 3 other Irish lads. This road trip was to mark the end of our respective backpacking adventures. Our last stop was in New York where we had to part as I returned home to Melbourne, Australia and Dave to Galway, Ireland. Several months apart and the struggle of long distance was filled with daily Skype dates and eventually Dave was able to make the big move to Melbourne. Who would have guessed that a little hostel would change our lives."
One of the most special parts of the day was seeing each other for the first time before the ceremony, which in the Jewish culture is called the Bedeken. Laura tells us… “We had an artist in Israel create a personalized marriage certificate which symbolizes us as individuals who are coming together and joining our families, history’s and traditions using personalised hidden symbols within two trees. We chose this intimate moment of the Bedeken to sign our beautifully decorated marriage certificate which was witnessed by family.”
After this special moment, the wedding party made their way down to the front hall of Mount Falcon where family and friends from Ireland and Australia were waiting...
Intimacy was an important part of Laura and David’s wedding day. They celebrated with their very nearest and dearest. Laura details the day…“ It was important to us to have simple personal elements within the day. We just wanted it to be relaxed and full of music, good food and good people. We also wanted to focus on people getting to know each other as we have so many wonderful friends and family members from all over the world come celebrate with us.”
But to skip back a bit in the story - we were curious as to how they met? Both being keen photographers, David surprised Laura with a Polaroid camera for Valentine's day. The following weekend he suggested they go for a picnic to the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne, and of course bring the new camera. Laura tells us about the day..."We often take the camera on day trips, so I didn’t give his insistence of bringing both cameras a second thought. We stumbled upon an old tree with a huge canopy that provided a shady place overlooking the lake, providing a picturesque backdrop for our afternoon. After a relaxing day, I began packing our belongings back into the basket. Dave told me he wanted one last photo before we returned home and began setting up the tripod and his camera. I stood as Dave walked away to set the timer. After some fiddling with the settings, he returned, however rather than smile for the camera, he grabbed my hands and went down on one knee! After the initial shock wore off and a few tears and swearing later (not my finest moment), Dave brought out some champagne that he had somehow snuck into the picnic basket to celebrate (how presumptuous)! It was at this point that he revealed to me that when he set the timer, he changed the settings to time lapse so the entire proposal had been captured."
The beautiful and homely Mount Falcon Estate provided the perfect venue for this couple encompassing their main priorities. “From the very beginning our best decision was planning the wedding that was right for us because of our values and what represented us as a couple. It was extremely important to us that our wedding wasn’t only about the love of two people, but the coming together of two families, two countries and two cultures which is why we had an interfaith ceremony which incorporated the blending of both Celtic and Jewish culture in our wedding ceremony."
They began their life as a married couple just as they did when they first met...on an American road trip. “We decided to head to the Caribbean to an all inclusive resort in Punta Cana to relax after the craziness of the wedding celebrations. Once rejuvenated, we flew to Miami, picked up a convertible Mustang and drove. Figured our first trip as a couple was an American road trip so why not continue as our first trip as a married couple…”
Congratulations to the happy couple and thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous wedding with us all. A big thanks to Art Wedding Photography for the incredible photos. To see more from Art Wedding Photography visit http://artweddingphotography.eu/.
