Merriment & Marriage: Peggy + Michael's Alternative Wedding

This is a whole lotta fun...

Both alumni of the same university, Peggy and Michael were on the same course for four years - when in their final year they finally got together. Having grown up together in college and having a large group of mutual friends Peggy and Michael knew their Mount Druid wedding was bound to be a lot of fun - and that it was. Indulging in a mutual sweet tooth Peggy and Michael had a multitude of sweet treat options, as well as a proper party band and pretty details all captured by Moat Hill...

Michael and Peggy first met in college, where they were classmates and friends for four years. In their final year they ended up in the same final year project group and got closer and closer. Peggy remembers..."We both ended up in the same Final Year Project group together. As all our DCU friends can attest this means that you pretty much spend every day for 6 stressful months together. By the end of it, everyone was more or less ready to kill one another. But for Michael and I it was the complete opposite. We continued to meet up and see each other after college and Michael finally managed to convince me that we were more than just good friends. We haven’t looked back since."

Having know each other for over 8 years Michael decided to propose while on holidays in Thailand. Peggy tells their story..."We were on holiday in Thailand during September 2014. About a week before leaving, Michael rang my Dad to ask for his permission to marry me. My Dad is known as a big messer, so Michael wanted to throw him off the scent. He pretended to ask for help finding all Ireland tickets. My dad being caught off guard was in full GAA mode before Michael put him out of his misery and discussed the real reason for the call. Of course my Dad was thrilled and gave his blessing. Having known Michael for about 8.5 years at this stage he was happy giving the thumbs up. Michael asked for the news to be kept secret from my mam, as much as he adores her she is the worst secret keeper. Michael figured I’d end up finding out before he actually asked!"

Peggy continues..."With all this sorted, it was finding the right moment. Most of our holiday had passed before he made his move. We were relaxing on the sand on Mae Haad beach in Ko Pha Ngan (and no there wasn’t a full moon party or bucket in sight!!) Watching the sunset and sipping on drinks Michael reached behind his back and brought back a little box with him and asked could he ask me a question. Having spotted the box I got a little emotional but managed to nod my head after he said some lovely stuff before asking me to marry him. There was other people on the beach and he knew I’d have been embarrassed if too many people noticed so he kept it lovely and private, exactly how he knew I’d want it. After hugs and tears we were straight on the phone to our families. My poor Dad had nearly passed out at this stage….He was waiting nearly 3 weeks for it to come out. Every time I’d sent a picture or a message to our family whatsapp group he thought it would be the long awaited news. Finally the message arrived! My mam was ecstatic along with my siblings and Michael’s family. Then we texted some of our close friends before heading out to celebrate with some bubbly. It was the perfect end to a perfect holiday."

Before they'd gotten engaged Peggy had spotted Mount Druid while helping her sister venue hunt. Peggy instantly knew it was where she'd marry, and Michael took very little convincing. Peggy told us..."Even on the wettest most miserable day in November 2014, the quirky potential shone through for us. With everything we needed for our big day on site and Mongolian yurts for accommodation there was no way we couldn’t get married there."

Keeping things fun and personal Peggy and Michael had their ceremony on site in the tin chapel with “No Ugly Crying” hankies for the girls and YAY flags for waving in the air once the I dos were said.

Both partial to a few sweet treats Peggy and Michael went all out for their reception snacks. Peggy recounts..."During the drinks reception we had delicious doughnuts made with a rich tea and nutella signature flavour (our go to snack) as well as tasty popcorn from Cornude. We knew a lot of our guests would enjoy this as much as we did. The sweet tooth runs within our family and friends! While all this was going on I had the lovely Conor Merriman, a super talented illustrator draw my guests and capture the atmosphere of the day. As well as all this, for me what made the day even more special was working with my friend Lorraine Keenan in creating the overall look and décor of each room. She was able to get all my mad ideas fulfilled and she even added some more for good measure. Every aspect of the venue was exactly what Michael and I wanted."

Once the food and venue were taken care of the rest of the day was really just about having lots of fun. Peggy remembers..."We really wanted our wedding to be a happy, loved up, relaxed and friendly day. We wanted our friends and family to enjoy themselves and not to be worrying about the particulars. Having our family and close friends involved throughout was very important to us. We have many long lasting friendships and wanted to return the love our pals have shown us throughout the years."

Wedding band Till Death Do Us Party were also a crucial factor in everyone having fun - so much fun Peggy forgot to even throw her bouquet.

A child minder to two adorable little kids, Peggy really wanted to make sure they were involved in the day. She sweetly told us..."Paddy and Lilyann are siblings who I have looked after for many years. I love them and their family dearly and had to include them in our big day! Lilyann was the ring bearer and Paddy was involved in the hand fastening during the ceremony but it was during our dinner reception where they really shone. We knew they would want to be involved even more, so we proposed them being our polaroid photographers and they jumped at the chance. All our guests were so impressed at how polite they were when asking would people like to take a picture and leave a message in our wedding guest book. Paddy as lead photographer took his job very seriously and the pictures he took were amazing. Lilyann was the guest gatherer. She left no stone unturned and managed to get just about everybody involved. I would highly recommend anyone with kids coming to their wedding to give them a job like this. Not only did they have fun but all the guests loved dealing with them."

Once all their partying was done Peggy and Michael went on a whirlwind honeymoon taking in several stops across Asia. Peggy told us..."Our wedding was on a Friday and that Sunday we headed off to the airport. I’m pretty sure we forgot a lot of the vital stuff but we were on too much of a high to have noticed. Our first port of call was the Island of Langkawi in Mayalisa. It was so nice to relax and take in the sun after the past few hectic weeks. From here we went to the neighbouring island of Penang. This was more of a city break so it was great to have a contrasting experience to our first few days. After Penang we flew to Borneo. This was amazing. It is a beautiful country and has amazing sites. We even got to see baby orangutans!! From total peace and quiet we landed into Hong Kong. A mad bustling, exciting and busy city. Our friends who live there had everything planned for us and were amazing tour guides. We almost needed another holiday just to get over Hong Kong! Overall a wonderful, memory packed honeymoon."
