When the couple describe the vision for their real wedding as "Marie Antoinette meets viking, meets gothic enchanted forest, meets Game of Thrones, meets Lord of the Rings marries rock ’n’ roll," you know it's not going to be some kind of run of the mill bash! Canada-based couple Sylviane and Derek came back to Ireland for their Blackwater Castle wedding. Blending Irish and Canadian traditions (with their own unique spin, of course!), the couple tailored their own fun and personalised celebration - Mrs Redhead Photography was on hand to beautifully capture their special day.
Derek popped the question to Sylviane on her birthday, “He proposed on the ledge of a 150-storey tower that rotates offering 360 degree views of Toronto! We had dinner in the rotating restaurant and then finished off the evening with a surprise proposal on the ledge outside!”
The couple had an atmospheric outdoor ceremony in the stunning castle gardens.
We love the clear (and completely unique!) vision this pair had for their wedding day, "Marie Antoinette meets viking, meets gothic enchanted forest, meets Game of Thrones, meets Lord of the Rings marries rock ’n’ roll! Authentic, laid back, medieval vibes paired with rock n’ roll, blues and classic Irish music! Happy vibes only!”
The bridesmaids dressed in mix and match black dress tying in beautifully with Sylviane's show-stopping gothic-inspired wedding dress.
The couple loved they idea of getting married in a castle, “They allow you to decorate it and staff it as you wish so you can control and customise everything!” Sylviane tells us, “Blackwater Castle is an amazing venue, I can’t recommend it enough! Patrick and Sheila are amazing owners and hosts.”
Derek and Sylviana combined different traditions across their day, “The authentic Irish sing-song, a Canadian-themed bonfire and fire-roasted potato bake and the amazing time we all had. Seeing all of our friends and family together enjoying themselves on our special day, made it all the more special. It was a magical day in a magical setting.”
Sylviane jokes that she enjoyed the creative process behind decorating and designing the wedding so much, she might even consider a career change!
The couple wanted to take their guests back in time with decor that paid homage to the venue, “How often do you get free reign of a castle to decorate as you wish, right?” says Sylviane. “We wanted authentic and delicious food and great tunes! We were most concerned with our guests having a good time.”
The centrepiece of the reception was the stunning medieval-style feast, "Adrian Daly and his gracious wife (and a friend) also helped decorate the main dining room,” the couple tells us. “A custom charcuterie table made of live moss and flowers and decorated with antlers, candelabras, candles, vines and hanging wisteria along with a deer head mounted on the wall! The execution was spectacular! What a great job!”
This pair pass on their tips for other couples, “It’s your day, do what makes you happy. Forget about everyone’s (friends’, family, traditions’!) opinions of how your day should be. It’s not about them, it’s about the two of you. Make it personal, make it unique and make it about you!”
Thanks so much to Sylviane and Derek for sharing your one-of-a-kind wedding with us. And to Mrs Redhead Photography for documenting all the love! See more from their day in the gallery below.
