Fairytale on the Farm: Jane and Paul's Marquee Wedding

An all-hands-on-deck celebration with an elegant, luxurious feel

Today's real wedding is completely unique, not only because it took place on the bride's family farm in Cork, but because it's bursting with swoonworthy DIY details. Together with their families and friends, Jane and Paul clearly put so much thought into their big day, from the garden ceremony to the family-style food offering, to the wood-palette bar, all of which are captured here by McMahon Studios. Between the romantic countryside portraits and Jane's mixed-gender bridal party, it's impossible for us to pick a favourite element from this lovely marquee wedding at home. Instead, we're going to let you choose your own (but, we're warning you, it won't be easy!)

Before we go any further, we better find out how these two first met! "Paul and I met back in 2008 on a family holiday in France," Jane tells us. "I thought we would just have a summer romance, but Paul had other plans. On our return, he was down to Cork on the first train to see me! We spent years going back and forth on the train from Cork to Dublin until I finally made the move to Dublin six years ago."

Paul popped the question on a trip to the U.S. "He found the perfect moment on a beach in New Jersey just as the sun was going down," Jane remembers. "It was beautiful evening. It was truly the most perfect spot he could have picked. I was so surprised!"

Jane tells us that the couple decided on a marquee wedding at home after they had viewed a couple of wedding venues. "We thought that it would be impractical to have the wedding at my home farm. But the more we looked, the more we were convinced that no other venue could live up to the personal feeling that my home brought to our wedding day. We had the ceremony in the garden, where we shared our own vows and planted a wedding cake tree (yep, this is genuinely a species of tree!) in a tree-planting ceremony, to symbolise the longevity and resilience of our marriage."

This is such a gorgeous ritual to incorporate into a wedding at home - it really reflects the couple's open-minded approach to wedding planning. "We are both quite easy-going and all the usual formalities of weddings just didn’t resonate with us," Jane says. "We wanted something more relaxed to give our guests an alternative wedding experience. Being brought up on a farm, good quality food was always very important to me. We brought this to our wedding through shared antipasti boards, cheeses from France, homemade chutneys (courtesy of Mom) and a buffet-style main meal, featuring a home-reared pig on the spit."

Jane describes the big day as a "real fairytale brought to life. It was truly magical from start to finish. My own childhood home in Cork was transformed into our dream wedding venue by the love of family, friends and neighbours. It was a very personal and emotional day, the overwhelming love everyone put into making the day happen surrounded us and filled the air. We are forever grateful to everyone who made it so perfect."

After the ceremony, guests were invited to enjoy pink gin cocktails, prosecco and beers in the courtyard and gardens. "After dinner, we sat on hay bales under the stars," Jane says, "and roasted marshmallows on open fires, until finally we danced the night away."

Jane's advice for engaged couples is to "do things exactly the way you want to do it. It’s your day and your guests will enjoy a different wedding experience."

We love the pretty decorative touches dotted around the farm. "For the week before the wedding, when most brides are getting their tan and nails done, Paul, Paul’s family, my family and I were setting up our wedding venue! There was an amazing buzz around my home in the lead up to the big day. We had more people to help than we had jobs to do! We had neighbours gardening, aunts flower arranging, uncles fixing wedding signs, friends setting up the tables in the marquee, mothers putting up fabric arches, brothers and fathers connecting the electricity and water to the marquee and much, much more! It was incredible!"

And after their stunning marquee wedding at home, Paul and Jane headed off to Japan for their honeymoon. "It was so beautiful," they tell us. "We flew into Toyko, traveled to Kyoto, the old capital of Japan and spent our final few nights in a five-star resort near Mount Fuji."

At this point, we've got to say a huge thank you to Jane and Paul for sharing their special day with us, and to McMahon Studios for providing the beautiful photographs. Make sure to explore the gallery to see more from their chic farmyard soirée!
