When two people get matching tattoos just a few days after they meet, you know the connection is pretty strong, so it's safe to say that today's real wedding couple were meant to be together! Scottish groom Billy and Irish bride Neasa picked a really romantic setting under a yew tree at Markree Castle for their ceremony and the rest of the day just flowed from there. Expect boho bridal style, vibrant wildflowers, sudden showers (of course!), carefree portraits in an overgrown meadow, an epic naked cake and a dramatic drum troop finish, all captured by the talented team at NavyBlur!
Billy and Neasa met as students in Glasgow through a mutual pal, Lynsay, who went on to be Neasa's maid of honour! "Billy and a bunch of other friends were stranded in the snow, so Lynsay and I put them up in our little cottage in the Westend. We talked about music and Ireland and whiskey, and a few days later, we got matching tattoos! We’re still very fond of them ...and of each other!" I guess when you know, you know!
We are full-on obsessed with Neasa's Sabina Motasem satin silk wedding dress! The cut is 1930s glam meets 1990s cool, while the delicate mesh topper is just a little bit boho.
You know we love oversized florals, but these pretty wildflower posies prove that small bouquets can have just as much impact.
For his proposal, Billy took Neasa to the seaside on a cold Christmas morning. "He got down on one knee and I acted 'totally cool'," she tells us.
One of the couple's favourite parts of wedding planning was writing their wedding ceremony. "We wanted something that was meaningful for us, with words we love and people we love, and we wanted to honour our parents and the places we come from too, so we had Irish and Scottish elements in the ceremony. Putting all that together, that was the best part!"
"After that, it was all about the party," Neasa says. "Billy’s a musician and I’m a dancer so those bits were very important. One friend told us his 'knees were sweating.' That's a good result!" Sweaty knees will henceforth be known as the mark of a great wedding!
This woodland setting is so special and intimate! Plus, the yew tree sheltered the couple and their guests from the rain!
Neasa describes the look of the day as "kind of wild and wistful with lots of ferns and candles, and colours inspired by the sea. The ceremony felt very light and peaceful to us."
It took the couple no time at all to settle on Markree Castle as their venue. "It’s very grand and Celtic with big open fires and a lovely Irish wolfhound roaming around. We loved the grounds, the light and the idea of having the whole place to ourselves. The gin bar was pretty cool too!"
That yew tree really was a lifesaver, as it was actually pouring rain during the ceremony!
Billy and Neasa wanted very informal, carefree wedding portraits, so they looked for a photographer who could create just that. "Photos were a big deal," Neasa says. "And the Navyblur guys brought so much joy to the day."
If you can't call on your husband for a piggyback on your wedding day, when can you!?
Asked to pick a highlight from their day, the couple immediately think of their guests. "The people made it," Neasa says. "We’re from different countries and we’ve lived in different countries together over the years, so to see all our friends and families coming together for a few days in the west of Ireland, that was pretty special."
Billy and Neasa are quick to point out that they had lots of help in putting their wedding together. "Our parents and brothers and friends were all incredible," Neasa says. "Dougie, our groomsman, practically moved in to my Dad’s shed for a week! He made everything - signs, lanterns, our guestbook and our stationary before that. And we had friends playing music, piping, driving the wedding cars, making favours... we’re very lucky and very grateful."
Neasa's advice to other couples is to milk the engagement for all it's worth. "We met some amazing folk along the way and received lots of wisdom and blessings of all kinds, the whole thing was very humbling."
The couple created a chilled atmosphere for their big day by changing up the traditional wedding timeline. "We wanted the vibe to be laid-back for our guests so we did things like photos and speeches a bit differently," Neasa says. "There was a lot of laughter! It was thanks to the guys at Markree, Cora and Philip, and to our photographers, Christine and Xander, that we could pull those things off, of course!"
The semi-naked cake trend ain't going anywhere! Billy and Neasa's two-tiered beauty proves how easy they can be styled - just scatter a few fresh blueberries, ask your florist for a few sprigs of foliage, and you're done!
The couple kept their dining space décor simple, using a few small floral bunches in miniature vases to add colour to the tablescape.
After the wedding, Billy and Neasa headed to Kerry and the Blasket islands for a quick break. Then it was off to La Gomera in Spain, and Réunion in France. "Lots of little adventures" is how Neasa describes it, and we think it sounds just perfect!
Clearly, these guys know how to throw a party! Thanks so much to Billy and Neasa for giving us the lowdown on their big day, and to NavyBlur Photography for sharing their amazing images with us.
