A Leap Year Proposal and Sublime Style: Gráinne & Dan's Balyna House Wedding

You'll love this bride's super sweet proposal story!

Today's real wedding features a bride after our own hearts. Not only were we enamoured with Gráinne's thoughtful leap year proposal, but we are nigh on obsessed with her wedding day style too. She and Dan live in London, and made the journey back to Ireland for their wedding at Balyna House in Moyvalley, Co. Kildare. While the couple found planning their day online a breeze, their wedding week at home was less than smooth sailing, with flower/wardrobe/dog-related mishaps happening right up to their wedding morning. As you'll see from their beautiful photos by Give Us A Goo, it didn't stop the couple having their best day, with an emotional garden ceremony, sweet speeches, and a stunning first dance.

How stunning is Gráinne's braid, adorned with baby's breath? I know this one is going on lots of brides' wedding hair moodboards!

Roscommon bride Gráinne and Dublin groom Dan met in London where they’re both based. “We had both played tag rugby in London on different days with the same team. But our paths had never crossed until a fine August day in 2014, at a tag rugby tournament in West Ham Rugby Club in London.”

We adore a leap year proposal, and in 2016 Gráinne, who likes to do things differently, decided to buck tradition and propose to Dan on February 29th, “With the help of my friend, I bought Dan an acoustic guitar as he loves music and had a number of electric guitar but no acoustics. Along with the guitar, I bought a silver plectrum which said ‘Marry Me.’ The proposal took place in our first apartment together, Dan said yes! Then it took six months to find the perfect engagement ring!”

The couple lucked out with the weather for their outdoor ceremony at Balyna House.

The couple tell us they were eager to plan a wedding that represented both of them equally and to have all of the people they hold close, to be by their side on the day.

Looks like lots of tissues were required for Gráinne and Dan's emotional vows.

Balyna House at Moyvalley had everything the bride and groom we were looking for in a wedding venue, “Everything in one place, enough rooms for all our guests to stay for the weekend and beautiful grounds. We were down to two venues and Orla the coordinator in the Moyvalley was the deciding factor on our final decision.”

The couple had an epic two-part honeymoon in New Zealand and Fiji, “New Zealand was amazing, we travelled around the South Island we would return in a heartbeat. In Fiji we stayed in Likuliku Resort which is a once in a lifetime resort which was amazing, we also stayed on the main island which was not at as beautiful. If we could do it again ,we would spend less time in Fiji and more in New Zealand.”

This pair have some succinct advice to pass on to other couples in the throes of planning. “It’s your day do as you please. But you do not need all the extras.”

Let's take a second to swoon over Gráinne's positively regal wedding day style. Her blue wedding dress is beautifully embellished, while the cape (one of this season's biggest bridal trends!) gives her look such a sophisticated and glamorous feel - we love a unique bride who rocks something a little different! Her bridesmaid tied in with a fab drop waist dress with vintage style embellishment.

The couple started their speeches in the garden before moving indoors on account of the Irish weather!

Gráinne tells us that while planning from the UK was smooth sailing, things didn’t go quite to plan when the couple arrived home the week before the wedding, “My dress and cape were not ready. We went to collect the flowers from the wholesalers and they had forgotten to place the order, my mother, who was doing the flowers, made the best out of a bad situation and as you can see from the photos the flowers were beautiful even if they weren’t the ones we had planned. The day before the wedding, our Dog Otis managed to give me a burst lip and up until an hour before the wedding I didn't have my whole outfit sorted. My uncle came to the rescue collecting the bridal sample cape and my amazing sister and maid of honour made some alterations while I was getting my hair done.”

The couple personalised their day with song choices, and planned a memorable first dance - the shots of them rehearsing in the lobby are stunning!

So many beautiful photos, and there's even more in the gallery below! Thanks so much to Gráinne and Dan for sharing your wedding with us, and to Give Us a Goo for documenting the day!
