Rustic Bohemia in the French Countryside: Clara & Joe

Next-level florals and a bride who epitomises French girl chic!

If you weren't paying attention, you might think that today's real wedding was a styled photo shoot, because the level of attention to detail is just that incredible! Of course, once you see a photograph of French bride Clara and English groom Joe, you know instantly that these guys are the real deal! Their big day at Le Morimont in Alsace oozed laid-back countryside glamour, from the wild, oversized florals to the impossibly sweet outdoor ceremony, but nothing tops the giddy look on Clara and Joe's faces when they see each other at the top of the aisle! Raphaël Melka was kind enough to share his gorgeous photos with us, so let's take a closer look...

Clara and Joe met in Manchester, where Clara was doing a semester abroad. "We first saw each other in a bar with mutual friends, and I just knew," Clara tells us. "We never left each other since then."

Joe proposed on a quiet night at home. "I was studying for my exam right in the middle of our living room, when he came in with a huge bunch of flowers in his hand," Clara says. "Then he took me for something to eat in a fancy restaurant. We had been together for 7 years and I was dying for him to propose - I talked about it all the time!"

Clara and Joe had their ceremony in the ruins of an old church, and in place of a traditional altar, they had Lettre à Elise Events create some gorgeous floral arrangements. This is the kind of wedding décor that requires a lot of effort on the part of the stylist and the couple, but looks so seamless on the day!

Cute page boy signs for wedding ceremony

Cutest page boy sign ever? This kid's got my vote!

Clara looks extremely keen to get to the top of that aisle! I can feel the excitement from here!

It looks like the atmosphere in Le Morimont was electric! "We got married in the ruins of an old castle, which is right next to the wedding venue, hidden in the woods. It's known to have be used for Celtic ceremonies. Bizarrely, lots of people told us they could feel something special when they were there. I wouldn’t trade this place for any church or chapel. It suited us."

Gorgeous bridal hairstyle undone updo

We predict that lots of brides will be replicating Clara's undone updo and flower crown combo. It's so perfect for a summer wedding!

From the outset, Clara and Joe wanted to create a relaxed vibe for their wedding day. "We didn’t want anything too sophisticated," Clara says. "The wedding had to reflect who we are. We wanted a prairie-style wedding, with guests sitting in the grass. We wanted a wedding that was about the friends and family who surrounded us for so long, both as a couple and as individuals. We wanted our wedding to be boheme and truthful."

For this couple, it was all about having fun and being themselves. "Things were well-planned but we wanted the overall feeling to be spontaneous."

Clara and Joe busted a move during their ceremony, and by the sounds of it, they didn't stop dancing for the whole day! "I had the conviction since the early days of planning that Afterlife by Arcade Fire would be the song for our first dance, and I wanted to base our dance on Greta Gerwig's performance in the film directed by Spike Jonze. Joe didn’t agree straight away - I had to convince him!"

Their choreography turned out to be too good to resist - their friends all rushed onto the dancefloor for the climax of the song! "The atmosphere in the room was just incredible," Clara says, "It was pretty unique!"

Clara admits they had a few reservations about their venue, Le Morimont. "This venue is not an easy one, as there is nothing there - just an auberge (inn) and a barn. You have to organise every single detail if you want it to go well. But this place, lost in the middle of nowhere, is just amazing. The colours of the trees are amazing. It makes people happy and free to be themselves."

French chateau wedding

One of the couple's main concerns was food and wine. "In France, you serve Champagne and canapés for a large part of the afternoon," Clara explains. "Then you spend a good 3 or 4 hours at dinner. And it has to be good!"

Another hugely important element of the day was the music. "We love music, it defines us, really." Clara says. "The choice of the DJ was one thing we didn’t want to make any mistakes with. We wanted a proper DJ and Raphael Charpentier was great. He’s an artist and he plays wherever he wants but I would recommend him to anyone getting married in France."

These guys really made the most of the barn at Le Morimont. A table plan mounted on a vintage door was an inspired choice!

In the end, Clara and Joe's three-day bohemian bash exceeded all of their expectations. "It was and will always be one of the most incredible weekend in our lives," Clara says. "We stayed at the venue from the Friday up until the Monday, so we have so many memories of the time our families and friends spent together before and after wedding."

Clara and Joe named their tables after beloved music venues - that one's going in our table name ideas post!

Clara's advice to engaged couples is to "plan a day that reflects who you are," and we couldn't agree more! "Take the time to see family and friends before and after the wedding day," she adds. "Make the most of your day and be yourselves because it goes so fast!"

Clara and Joe sort of had two honeymoons - after their civil ceremony, they took a trip to Primavera music festival in Barcelona ("That was literally the best experience ever!"), and a few months after their wedding weekend in Le Morimont, they jetted off to South Africa. Look, if someone wants to turn two honeymoons into a trend, I'm all for it!

OK, I'm officially all swooned out! Thanks so much to Raphaël Melka for sharing these beautiful photographs and to Clara and Joe for telling us how they put the whole thing together!
