It's impossible not to fall in love with the real wedding we're sharing today, once you hear about the lengths the grooms went to personalise their big day! Irish groom Seán and American groom Parker planned a sensationally gorgeous wedding at Kilshane House, all the way from their home in Boston, a job that included hand-crocheting cake toppers, constructing a replica of the house from the animated movie Up for an alternative guest book, and even carting some very special cupcakes with them on the plane! Awake and Dreaming captured the day in glorious detail, so let's take a closer look...
Seán tells us that he met Parker in Boston, where Seán was completing the final year of a pediatrics residency at Harvard, and Parker was doing an internship at TripAdvisor - what an impressive couple! "Our first date was at a science-themed bar called Miracle of Science in Cambridge Massachusetts - we were nerding out hard core from the beginning! We initially feared that it would be just a summer romance, but, two weeks before Parker returned to St Louis for his final year at Washington University, he received a job offer at Tripadvisor in Boston, to begin after graduation. After a year of flights back and forth to Boston, St. Louis, Parker's home of Kansas City, Missouri, and my home of Co. Clare, Parker moved to Boston. We've been together ever since!"
Seán was determined that he wanted to pop the question on his home turf! "But in order to have both of our families there and keep it a surprise, I needed an excuse! This came in the form of Adele’s finale concert in Wembley, which was enough to get both families on the same side of the Atlantic. Adele backed out last-minute due to illness, but I didn't! Parker and both families were caught off guard with a proposal on the Cliffs of Moher." Seán arranged for Awake and Dreaming to capture the proposal, and the photos, along with his Rubix Cube engagement ring box were, of course, heavily featured on the wedding day!
Seán admits that the thought of planning a wedding was daunting for both he and Parker, so they decided to sit down to define their priorities right at the beggining. "First and foremost, we hoped our guests would feel welcome, comfortable and have a great time. Given that this was the first same-sex wedding for many of our guests, it was important to us that the experience was a really positive one!"
We're extremely proud to report that the couple used One Fab Day to find their dream wedding venue, Kilshane House! "We made a shortlist of potential wedding venues from the One Fab Day wedding directory, which was a really helpful resource as a starting point," Seán says. "We then visited several of them, and, once we had seen Kilshane House, we knew we had found our venue. It ticked all the boxes of having an incredible space for the ceremony (the unique and intimate glass conservatory) and reception (the orangery) all on one site. Everyone at Kilshane was friendly, supportive and beyond helpful in making us and our guests feel welcome and at home for the day. The delicious food, on-site accommodations, and proximity to many tourist destinations for our American guests were a bonus!"
LOLworthy signage features heavily in this couple's wedding! "We wanted humour and terrible puns to feature throughout the day," Seán says. "Between the 'Pick a seat there’s plenty of room, we’re all here to see the grooms!' sandwich board, and the 'Don’t forget about the UVA, even on the wedding day' sign on the sunscreen wedding favours, we hope they weren’t too punishing for our guests!"
This looks like an incredibly special wedding ceremony! "We wanted it to be very personal and full of music," Seán explains. "My Auntie Ann made her debut as an officiant (or the offici-AUNT, as we called her on the day) and brought her warmth, thoughtfulness, kindness and humour to the ceremony. We structured the ceremony to follow our journey as a couple, with various readings and pieces of music representing milestones along the way."
Seán and Parker's big day was a real fusion of cultures. "We wanted the American guests to experience Irish culture and have the true Irish wedding experience, including the sing-songs lasting into the early hours of the morning, while also including elements of Kansas City and US culture for the Irish guests."
The fathers-of-the-grooms participated in the couple's hand-fasting ritual, which featured plaits created by Seán's Mam, in the Clare and Kansas City colors!
Sprinkles, anyone? "We both felt strongly that our guests should get to experience the Irish delicacy of a 99," Seán says, "and the ice cream truck supplied these in abundance, our guests getting the authentic Irish experience of enjoying ice cream in the rain!"
Seán describes the wedding as, "a celebration of individuality, of being ourselves. It was our opportunity to express our gratitude for the support of friends and family, who came together from two cultures on the day to have a great time!"
I love how joyful and windswept the wedding party look in these photos - two very common side-effects of an Irish wedding!
The reception space at Kilshane House looks so beautiful all dressed up for Seán and Parker's big day!
How gorgeous is this Up-themed guest book!? "Parker built the wooden house from the movie, and guests stamped their fingerprints with finger paint to form the balloons over the house and sign their names as our guestbook."
I could honestly write an entire feature about this couple's cake table! They went to so much trouble to ensure that their favourite treats were present on their big day, ready to be sampled by their guests. But before we go any further, we have to hear about this gorgeous wedding cake! Seán tells us, "my mother baked, iced and decorated the wedding cake, which featured Granny’s chocolate biscuit cake recipe and Nana’s Christmas fruitcake recipe." Parker crocheted the adorable cake topper grooms himself - what a talented bunch!
As a fellow Co. Clare native, I can confirm that O'Connor's buns taste as good as they look! The couple also brought some special treats on the plane to Ireland with them. "Our dessert table featured desserts from the US, including red velvet cupcakes from our favorite bakery in Boston, and gooey butter cake, a Missouri specialty. While bringing treats from America was a bit of extra effort, it really helped to bring elements of Kansas City and the US to the day."
We highly recommend clicking through to the gallery to see more from this amazing day! But before you do, we've got to say a quick but huge thank you to Seán and Parker for letting us fawn over their wedding, and to Awake and Dreaming Photography for sharing the images. What a beauty!
