A Luxe Elopement in Central Park: Kavisha and Hamish

This chic celebration epitomises New York glamour!

I'm forever surprised and impressed by the level of creativity in elopements, no matter how many of them we share on the site, and today's real wedding is a perfect example. Australian bride Kavisha and UK groom Hamish opted out of the big, traditional Indian celebration that their families expected them to have, instead plumbing for a super small Central Park wedding with just three guests. But while many couples keep their outfits low key for an elopement, this pair floored us with their style, her in a show-stopping Berta gown, him in a sophisticated suit by Politix. After tying the knot at Cop Cot in Central Park, they went on a tour of the city with photographer Everly Studios to take some phenomenal portraits, and finished with cocktails in an outrageously cool bar. We'll be highly surprised if you're not Googling flights to NYC by the end of this post!

Kavisha and Hamish tell us that they met in Hamish's home town of London, shortly after Kavisha moved there from Sydney. "I was catching up with a Sydney friend who had moved to London a few years prior. She said I needed to get out and date, so scrolled through her Facebook friendship list for potential dates. One of those potential dates was Hamish! We exchanged numbers, and, after texting for a few weeks, we finally met up for a drink at Mint Gun Club in London and hit it off instantly. I left the date thinking I had met the man I wanted to marry. This was a shock because neither a relationship nor marriage was on my radar at the time!"

Kavisha says that their engagement was the result of "the least romantic proposal on the planet! We were in Paris to see a childhood friend of my dance at Le Moulin Rouge. We had lunch at Le Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower, and, after a few too many wines, I must have hinted that it would have been a perfect proposal venue. He flung a pouch containing an engagement ring across the table to me, before quickly snatching it back. I had clearly ruined any plans he had of proposing!"

The couple tell us that their families expected them to have a big, traditional Indian wedding, with typically between 300 and 400 guests, either in Sydney or London. "Either location would have meant that half the wedding party would need to travel across the world," Kavisha says, "so instead, we decided we would elope! We chose New York as we viewed it as the half-way point between Sydney and London."

They faced some resistance from their parents, but they came up with a way to soften the blow! "We reached a compromise with a small, traditional Indian wedding ceremony in London with a small selection of our immediate family, a couple of weeks before the big day."

How have we made it this far without discussing Kavisha's breathtaking bridal look in more detail!? Embellished with hundreds of tiny beads and sequins, her Berta Privée gown needed very little accessorising, just a simple veil and a few, well-chosen pieces of Swarovski jewellery. She topped her look off with an incredible pair of glittered Jimmy Choo sandals. When in New York, eh?

Any Simpsons fans out there will appreciate this reference! "Hamish and I originally bonded over The Simpsons," Kavisha syays, "so he surprised me by wearing the same cufflinks Homer Simpson wears in the episode titled 'Lisa's Wedding'."

Originally, the couple were planning a true elopement with no guests beyond a celebrant and witnesses. "However, fortuitously, some of our best friends were in New York at the time, so a couple of days before the big day, our wedding went from zero guests to three!"

Kavisha and Hamish tell us that they didn't think too much about the aesthetic details, beyond their killer outfits, of course! "We didn't have a particular theme, style or colour palette for the day. We wanted to be outdoors in the sun and greenery, and it was simply a culmination of the things we liked."

Kavisha's advice for engaged couples is to stick to your guns! "I think there's a lot of pressure from friends and family, as well as societal expectations to have a big fairytale wedding with all the bells and whistles. It's okay to have that if that's what you want. It's also okay to do something small and intimate instead. The initial stages of organising our big fat Indian wedding caused me so much anxiety, because there were so many decisions, all while I was dealing with a busy work schedule and buying our first home. In the end, the moment I made a decision to elope, I felt so much happier, as did Hamish. It was the right decision for us and I am still so happy with the way it turned out."

The couple capped off their wedding in quintessential New York style, with Old Fashioneds and hot dogs! "We love cocktails," Kavisha says, "especially Old Fashioneds, which was one of the reasons for stopping by at The Campbell. One of the best Old Fashioneds we had in New York was the one Hamish ordered that day. Hamish also loves his food trucks, so after our wedding portraits, he had a hot dog from Nathan's food truck outside the Plaza Hotel in his wedding suit."
