Long, short, fine or thick, frizz affects all hair types and taming it is never more important than on your wedding day when you want everything to look perfect. Especially if you're opting for a super sleek vintage waves or a slick ponytail. The reason frizzy hair can impact anyone is because we're all guilty of doing the main thing that causes frizz - colouring our hair and using heat stylers. But the good news is you can tackle this problem well in advance of your big day so that your locks fall perfectly into place when you need them to. Believe us, if you follow these tips on how to tame frizzy hair in time for your wedding day now, your bridal hair stylist (and you!) will thank us.
What causes hair to frizz?
As we said the most common culprit for frizz is parched, dry ends meeting humidity or moisture in the air. Let's break it down, colouring and heat styling your hair causes what's known as hair porosity, which means there are minuscule holes in your hair strands. Naturally your hair want to hydrates itself to fill these holes, so it sucks up the moisture in the air in order to do this. What are you left with? Monica Gellar on holidays hair! No thanks.
Prevention is Better Than Cure
When hair comes into contact with humidity, it pulls that available moisture towards the strands, causing them to swell in size and even kink if you have a natural curl or wave. The result is frizz and a hair style that looks nothing like it did when you left the house. This is why prevention is better than cure. Using a heat protection spray when you are blowdrying or heat styling your hair is a vital step that will cut down on hair porosity over time. Bumble and bumble Heat Shield Thermal Protection Mist, €32, is great as it repairs previous damage and protects from future damage. Your hair won't be weakened by hot tools like hairdryers and wands.
Use the Right Products & Tools
Hair stylist Ricky Walters who looks after the locks of celebrities like Pixie Lott, Nicola Roberts and Jodie Kidd in his London salon, Salon64, says that the right treatments and the right tools are also great frizz-fighting weapons. "At the pricier end of the frizz solution spectrum is the Dyson Airwrap Multistyler, (€549.99 with six attachments, additional attachments avilable to purchase separately) which offers a multitude of styling options with a little practice," says Ricky. "Keratin treatments can be a fantastic option for long-term frizz control, but a good in-salon treatment can be costly too."
If you have finer hair and want something more pocket-friendly, Ricky recommends these two ranges to tame frizzy hair: Smooth Perfection from Pureology and the Frizz Dismiss range from Redken as both offer complete care packages that are paraben- and sulphate-free and can really help tame all but the wildest frizz.
Create a Good Routine
Improving your daily hair routine with good habits, as well as adding heat protection before styling, are two boxes that can be ticked easily and can play a major factor in improving the appearance of frizzy hair. "After shampooing, squeeze excess water out of the hair before applying the conditioner," advises Ricky. "We all know water and oil do not mix after all. If you do this, you'll use less conditioner and get a better effect." He then advises to comb the hair with a wide-toothed comb like the GHD Detangling Comb, €9.50, whilst the conditioner is on. "From this point on, do not comb or brush hair unless you intend to blow dry," he warns.
Consider Air Drying
Next squeeze the hair to dry it, do not rub it with a towel as this will tangle the hair, requiring it to be combed or brushed. "If you plan to let it dry naturally to reduce on heat styling in the run up to your wedding, and you want your wave or curl to be present, scrunch your product of choice into the hair rather than pulling it through," says Ricky. "Plaiting the hair when half dry until fully dry can also be very effective in combating frizz short term." Living Proof Curl Enhancer, €37.45, is ideal for weightlessly adding definition to natural curls.
Finishing Touch
To tame ends just before you say 'I do', seal the tips of the hair with a tiny amount of hair oil like Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil, €27.50. It keeps out humidity, stops frizz from forming and gives the hair a beautiful shine. Thinking about how to tame hair frizz in time for your wedding might not be high on your list of concerns right now, but improving your hair care routine and choosing the right tools and products well in advance of your wedding day will save you so much heartache on the day.
Fight Frizz as you Sleep
Hair wrapping is a gamechanger when it comes to fighting frizz. This is because it reduces bedhead frizz, meaning that in turn you get longer out of your blow dry or natural curly style. This means less heat styling and less washing, which as we know will improve the overall health of your hair. Opt for a pure silk hair wrap like Silke London's The Sofia, €57, which is not only effective at reducing damaging friction from your bed linen, but it's very comfortable to wear and undeniably chic looking.
While you can do your best to do all of the above, it's not always possible to tame frizzy hair entirely.
