Last week we shared our tips on tips on how to adapt your wedding decor for a different season if you've had to change your wedding plans due to Covid-19. Today, it's all about the style! We've had lots of brides get in touch who are now planning an unexpected winter date asking how they can adapt their spring or summer dress for a winter wedding, so we're here to help. With just the slightest adjustments and styled with the right accessories, all dresses can work equally well in the chillier season. Here's how in 6 simple ways...
1. A Little Alteration & A Few Adjustments
Sleeves are a great addition to your dress to combat the frosty temperatures of a winter wedding. If your dress doesn't feature them, and it allows for them, a good seamstress will be able to add them. With that said, just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to alter your dress to have sleeves! You could discuss the option to have them detachable so you could remove them for the evening, perhaps? That way you also get to wear the dress in its original silhouette if you wish.
If your dress is strapless and you wish you add more warmth, you could always consider a lace sleeve body or topper for underneath.
When it comes to underwear, make sure your bra has padding or opt to wear stick-on pasties - you want your guests to have their eyes on your face - not your chest! And if you are worried about cold legs, you could always add a practical pair of nude tights under your dress, no one will ever know!
2. Choose a Stylish (Yet Cosy!) Coverup
As with all cold weather dressing, layering is key. There are so many great bridal coverup options such as shawls, scarves capes, boleros, mohair shrugs, cardigans, wraps or even coats that will not only look great in the photos but keep you nice and cosy. These are great options for bridesmaids too! If your dress is made up of separates, you can switch up your options throughout the day such as add a lace sleeve topper for the ceremony, or add a jumper on top for outdoor portraits.
3. Add A Jacket
Bridal leather jackets are having quite the moment! Brides are rocking leather, denim and moto jackets to add a little bit of rock'n'roll style to their bridal look, but they're also a pretty great coverup option for the chillier temperatures of a winter wedding.
4. Switch Up Your Accessories
A statement necklace, headpiece or earrings are a great way to add a little glam to your new winter wedding look. Check out our features on the best bridal accessory designers, and the most fabulous statement earrings.
Gloves and mittens are also a great little winter wedding accessory to keep those fingers warm en route to your ceremony or, for during the portraits!
5. Consider Your Shoes
If you haven't yet chosen your wedding shoes, you may want to consider a closed toe option, or a pair that are more suited to winter weather. Spray any suede or leather shoes to protect them from being stained in wet weather, or for heels, pick up heel protectors so they don't get damaged. You can also add anti-slip protectors to the soles of your heels to make steps on frosty surfaces a little more safe and secure!
Bridal boots are a pretty great weather resistant option too. Look out for a pair that you're super comfortable in, and that are versatile enough to wear again. You might also want to consider having a pair of flats to hand for changing into when going between icy locations or photo spots.
6. Go Bold With Hair & Makeup
An autumn or winter wedding could be a great opportunity to go bolder with your hair & makeup. A deeper lip colour, a smoky eye, or add a little sparkle to your manicure perhaps? That being said, if you are more comfortable with a natural dewy look, you can totally rock that too! The best beauty look for your wedding day is the one that fills you with confidence.
A few sprigs of seasonal flowers, winter berries or foliage in your hair are an expensive, simple yet effective hair idea that we love which reflects the season.
