There comes a time in many relationships when an engagement is imminent and the top question on many a would-be proposer's mind is, "How should I propose?". Of course there are endless ways to pop the question, from a lavish spectacle to a low-key proposal. So today, we're taking a deep dive into all your options with our guide to figuring out how you should propose!
How Should I Propose?
Ask yourself what your other half would love.
Would they cringe at the idea of you doing it in public? Would they love a big gesture? Are they never happier than when you're both sitting on the couch at home? Would they like you to have a ring already, or would they prefer to chose their own? Should you do it on holidays or will they want to see friends and family straight away?
The best proposals are often heartfelt and show some effort. If you place your other half at the centre of your plans, and make it truly genuinely thoughtful, you can't go far wrong!
Some Tips for Planning the Perfect Proposal
- Make it authentic and personal, include things they love or that you like to do together, rather than something that doesn't seem natural
- Think about the ring, we've got a guide to ring styles, tips for engagement ring shopping, ideas for men's engagement rings, and our pick of token rings that should all help you get started
- Don't make the proposal about you - you might like football but it doesn't mean your other half wants to be proposed to at an Arsenal match
- If you think it's appropriate or something your other half would appreciate, remember to ask for their parents' blessing before you propose. Many modern couples forgo this step, but for others, it's an important gesture.
- Think about the location, do a scout to find the right spot and check when the best time to visit is - not doing your research is when proposal plans often go awry
- Nudge your other half to dress appropriately for the setting or activity - you don't want to feel under or over-dressed at your own proposal!
- Think about after the proposal, you don't want it to be anti-climactic, so have a plan for a romantic meal, swanky drinks, a weekend getaway or seeing friends and family to celebrate
- If you're keeping the proposal simple, say on a walk or at home, make sure you put some effort in, have some bubbly chilling, perhaps a mani booked and a nice plan for afterwards or the next day
- Impromptu proposals can be so romantic, but if that happens, think fast and make a plan to mark the celebration
- Be flexible, change your plans if you need to, whether that means, postponing for another day because your other half is sick, making a weather-proof plan, or proposing early if the right moment arises
- Think about who you tell in advance, while you might be excited to spread the word about your plans, your other half will probably want to share the news themselves, so it's best if everyone isn't in on it (unless you're planning a post-proposal party of course!)
- If in doubt, read other proposal stories for inspiration and bounce ideas off a trusted friend
- Think about what you're going to say, and don't forget to ask the question! Lots of proposers simply bring out the ring and go completely blank, so it's wise to think carefully about the big moment!
