The soft crunch of tires on gravel in my driveway was the first sign the holiday to Thailand had started. A complimentary chauffeur-driven black Mercedes-Benz S-Class was purring in my driveway, all included in Emirates's business class ticket and just so plush. I felt very important as I slid into the leather seats to be whisked off to the airport.

Once in departures, I strolled straight up to the Emirates business desk with not one person in front of me as the economy queue stretched all the way back to my right. I checked in my luggage and for the first time in years I had brought a proper wardrobe with me. The baggage allowance in business is a very generous 40kg and completely takes the pressure off packing.

After one of the quickest check-ins I've ever experienced it was straight into the Emirates Business Lounge in Dublin Airport for a glass of champagne while waiting for my flight. I was actually looking forward to getting onto EK162, which is a Boeing 777 from Dublin to Dubai, and when the flight was called, business-class passengers were allowed to board the plane first using a different door than those in economy so the rest of the flight doesn't end up walking by you when you are in your seat.

The configuration of business class in Emirates business is two seats, three seats, and then another two seats. I was in seat 7k which is a window seat to the left on the plane when boarding. There was a small divider between me and the person on my left, just enough to allow you to be private should you wish not to chat to anyone. The seats in business are inspired by the interior of a luxury sports car and at 72 inches long there is plenty of room to lie your seat flat. I had my own mini bar and iPad to control the in-house entertainment system called ICE and a place to put my shoes away in.

They say size doesn't matter but in the case of airplane TVs - it totally does! I happily sat back to watch the generous 32-inch telly that comes standard in every Boeing 777 suite. With over 5,000 movie and audio channels to choose from the hours were going to fly by.

I was barely in my seat before the flight attendant was over offering Veuve Clicquot 2012 for a pre-take-off tipple and handing me the two menus and wine list (yes, a wine list was offered)! The menu is sweet enough to rival an established restaurant with grilled beef fillet, roasted chicken with toasted barley risotto, and buttered asparagus and prawn machbous, just some of the dishes on offer for lunch. Desserts included vanilla and rhubarb panna cotta and a cheese board.

If you fancied a glass of wine the sommelier had chosen the Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 1er Cru 2020 as one of the white wine offerings. I opted for a glass of this after take-off and settled in to watch my first film of the trip. Literally ten minutes later the air hostess came up to me and asked if there was something wrong with my wine as I hadn't touched it yet.

I said I just hadn't had the chance to drink it yet with all the movie scrolling I was doing! She then offered to take it and replace it with a colder one as it may have reached room temperature. My mouth dropped open at this request, it still does, I told her the wine was fine but talk about attention to detail!

The attendants also put white linen napkins on your table before serving dinner - and proper cutlery - and the food is served on Royal Doulton china. The food was delicious, probably the best airline meal I have ever had, and the cabin crew didn't hold back with the wine.

I had just finished dinner when one of the attendants asked me if I would like my bed to be made up and if I could step out of my seat for a moment. Perhaps the best bit of flying business class on Emirates is the comfort of an actual bed and there was no tossing and turning on this flight. The plush armchair pushes back into a fully flat bed and the crew provides you with a mattress, duvet, and pillow when you are ready to take a nap. The bed has been inspired by NASA technology, offering a feeling of relaxation and weightlessness and it goes fully flat.

After a brief stop in Dubai, it was onto my second business class flight this time on a bigger Emirates plane, an A380 aircraft, complete with an onboard bar, yes an actual lounge on the plane you can sit in and order a drink from the bar, they even let me take a picture behind it! The second plane was huge, we boarded from beside the business class lounge in Dubai on the top floor of the plane so I never saw the passengers in economy underneath me.

This plane has a one, two, one configuration seat-wise. At my seat, there was another mini-bar with Evian water and this time Moët was served before takeoff along with a hot towel to keep you feeling refreshed.

The onboard welcome message from the captain told me that cabin crew from 19 different countries would be looking after the flight today, with 16 languages spoken on board. He also reassured us that the air inside the cabin is changed every two to three minutes! A bag filled with Bulgari products (creams, toothbrush etc) was also on the seat and then it was another five hours to Bangkok during which I slept the whole way through as it was the middle of the night so I didn't get a chance to avail of the mingling in the bar. A cheese and spinach omelette and fresh orange juice were offered to me just before we arrived.

After landing in Bangkok another Mercedes C Class was waiting for me at the airport. The chauffeur service is available in most Emirates destinations and is complimentary for up to 50 miles. Customers can pay mileage beyond that if they pay a supplement.

Fares from Dublin to Bangkok via Dubai start from economy class: €808, and business class: €3,760. These prices are inclusive of all taxes and charges, baggage etc.

If you get to fly business even once in your life do it on Emirates because life is too short!
