Glam at Home: Sarah + Stephen's Scottish Fairytale

Stunning inspiration for any of you planning a wedding at home.

When Sarah and Stephen got engaged they immediately knew they wanted to have a wedding where everyone felt "at home," and what better location for that than the beautiful home where Sarah grew up. Not just any ole house, Sarah's parents are the proud owners of a stunning 300 year old mill and riverside gardens, which were transformed into the dream venue for this one of a kind fairytale wedding at home. DIY details were added, as were fun food and whiskey favours - all of which were captured effortlessly by Donna Murray Photography to inspire any of you planning a wedding at home.

Stephen and Sarah met at the University of Aberdeen one late night whilst studying for exams. Sarah remembers..."We had reached saturation point with our studying so Stephen came up to speak to one of his old school friends whom I was studying with. We became extremely close as friends for around three years before our relationship blossomed. Stephen would say that I "snared" him whereas I would say he put in the work to "woo" me. Our friendship was a great foundation to our loving relationship which has made us a strong unit."

As Sarah grew up in Dubai, Stephen decided it would be the perfect place to propose - atop the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. Sarah describes the moment..."Stephen had originally planned to rent a sports car to arrive there in style but the penny pincher that I am, I said we had to take the metro. This foiled his plans and we eventually arrived at the Burj after a long walk in the 40 degree heat, much to Stephen's dismay. He took a few photos of me in front of the sunset overlooking the Dubai vista and just as the sun disappeared, he got down on one knee! It was so romantic and completely caught me off guard as I wasn't expecting it. Stephen had been designing my engagement ring with Kiran, the owner of an Emirati Jeweller for 6 months so we went straight down to meet him to finalise the design and to make sure I liked it. It truly was like a real life fairytale."

Continuing their fairytale Sarah and Stephen had a classic church ceremony in the stunning St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, with Sarah wearing a Princess perfect Caroline Castigliano gown, and her great granny's rose gold bangle.

Both lovers of a house party Sarah and Stephen decided to have a glam, yet relaxed, wedding at home. Sarah recounts..."We love having parties at home and making people feel welcome so we thought what better way to make everyone feel comfortable than to throw a wedding at home. We had a country vintage theme which included lots of gypsophila, lace, soft pastel tones and lots and lots of whisky and whisky casks to really make it a Scottish wedding!"

Sarah and Stephen also organised ice cream for their guests, with flavours named after things important to them including: Dubai Daiquiri and Stevie B's Strawberry. The decor was then largely made by Stephen's dad, Sarah told us..."Stephen's father is a great joiner and he really helped make our visions become a reality! All of the signage, giant S&S and Candy cart were hand made by him which was fantastic."

Sarah and Stephen fondly remember..."It was the happiest day of our lives and a few friends actually said that it was "the funniest day of their lives" which we really appreciated. All of our friends and family at home having a laugh and celebrating our love for one another was just the best experience!"
