Not blowing the budget and incorporating both their heritages was the main aim for Irish girl Suzanne and German groom Ben. By being clever and creative they achieved both these aims and more for their charming Millhouse wedding. Marga Kiewied captured all the details - from the unexpected glorious weather to one of the most impressive DIY wedding cake tables I have seen this year...
Dubliner Suzanne serendipitously met her husband for the first time during a weekend away in Dingle. She tells us... We met on a bank holiday weekend in Dingle, where we were with friends. Ben, originally from Bavaria in Germany, was doing his PHD in Trinity and I was working and living in Dublin (where I am originally from). We swapped numbers and met up again in Dublin.Â
As luck would have it, they fell in love and Ben proposed during a weekend away in Portugal. Suzanne recalls... Ben, having apparently been well schooled in the etiquette of proposing to an Irish girl, first asked my father for permission before orchestrating a romantic proposal on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, where we were holidaying at the time.Â
As Ben is originally from Germany the wedding was a fusion of German and Irish traditions. The humanist ceremony was intimate and relaxed and the weather was uncharacteristically sunny. Suzanne remembers... We landed a smashing sunny day in July for the event which contributed to a beautiful summery relaxed wedding. The Millhouse turned out to be the perfect good weather venue where the guests were able to hangout for most of the day and night in the beautiful gardens, soaking up the atmosphere. As more than one guest commented it felt more like a foreign wedding than an Irish one!Â
Â
Making the most of the weather, and their versatile venue, Suzanne and Ben took various portraits around the venue after the ceremony and then joined guests in the pavilion for a wedding feast and lots of dancing.
 Â
Eager not to go crazy with their wedding budget, Suzanne bought her Rembo Styling wedding dress secondhand, borrowed some jewellery from her mum and asked her maid of honour to do her makeup. Ben and Suzanne's mums and Bens aunt then arranged all the wedding bouquets.
 Â
The reception space at The Millhouse was decorated with stationery designed by Suzanne and a divine cake table with German and Irish cakes - all made by Suzanne.
The charming wedding favours were another sweet surprise. Suzanne details... As wedding favours, we provided miniature german beer mugs, from which a round of schnapps was drunk as a toast after dinner, as well as a bag full of homemade sweets. The wedding favours were designed and planned by me & executed by myself, the two mammies and my brother.
Seriously jealous of all these wedding treats...
Suzanne and Ben recall their highlights of the day... The team at the Millhouse were absolutely amazing throughout, there was nothing left to chance and they thought of everything, making the day run super smooth! A real highlight for all was the amazing set by the Hitmen Trio which got everybody up on the dancefloor, despite the sweltering heat on the night!Â
For their honeymoon Suzanne and Ben took a trip across the south-west coast of Ireland, ending in Dingle, where it all began. Huge congratulations to you both and thanks so much for sharing your wedding day with us all. A big thank you also goes to Marga Kiewied for sharing her work with us.
