I don't pick favourites, but I have to say, I'm pretty smitten with today's real wedding. Not only do Swedish bride Ellen and and Welsh groom Liam look beyond chuffed to be getting hitched, but I just love the ethos behind their day. Anything they could make or do themselves, they did - right down to the wedding dress - and they made it their mission to unify their guests and make everyone feel at home in Sweden. With the countryside at Gammelgården setting the tone for their day, I think you'll agree, Primalux Photography did a pretty great job capturing this summer barn wedding.
Ellen and Liam met while they were working together in London, “I was only there briefly and left soon after,” recalls Ellen. “But six months later, we met again at a mutual friend's leaving meal and it started from there.”
Can you believe Ellen made this dress herself!
Ellen tells us the proposal was very personalised and non-traditional, “A lot of thought went into it.”
Liam's Welsh cufflinks were a gift from his dad.
This is why we love a first look - the excitement, the romance!
The bride and groom explain how their DIY ethos made the day so special, “That we made most of it ourselves with the help of family and friends, it was a very personal wedding.”
We’ve had a lot of DIY weddings in our time, but this couple really went above and beyond, Ellen not only made her own dress, but she made Liam’s trousers and waistcoat, while a tailor college of hers made his jacket.
With lots of help from their friends, the couple didn’t need to rely too much on external suppliers, the couple’s friends (and the groom) played the music, the maid of honour did the hair, Ellen did her own makeup and hand-picked the flowers, and the bride’s sister designed the stationery. Talk about a talented bunch!
Sorry to gush, but how frickin' cute are these two!
The couple tell us about the vibe they aimed for with their summer barn bash, “It was relaxed and very Swedish. We were out in the countryside and wanted to give our British guests a real taste of Sweden. With the help of some incredible friends and family, we created and exceeded our wedding expectations.”
We don't often see a couple make their entrance together but we love it, such a modern idea. Start as you mean to go on and all that!
This looks like a beautiful church!
Bubbles make such a sweet (and eco-friendly) alternative to confetti.
Such a pretty bunch! Ellen's bridesmaids chose their own dresses, we the mix of pastel hues are lovely.
For Ellen and Liam, it was important to have everyone in one place, "To be able to invite everyone we wanted to be there and to show the British guests the Swedish countryside. We wanted everyone to just relax and have a great day.”
The couple were sold on the location of their barn venue, Gammelgården, “We wanted it out in the Swedish countryside but still close enough for the British guests to easily get there.”
This bunting-clad barn is a DIY dream!
This pair’s advice to others in the midst of planning? “Focus more on the people. Help everyone get to know each other rather than putting people in groups who know each other. Play games, personalise it and don't make it "just another wedding”.” Wise words you two!
Looks like these speeches were gas!
Hugs all around!
The couple headed off to Sri Lanka and the Maldives on honeymoon a few months after their wedding, “That's another tip: Get married in the summer, go on honeymoon in the winter. It gives you something to look forward to after the madness of the wedding and once the cold, dark nights have set in.” This pair are too clever!
Such a gorgeous wedding! Thanks so much to Ellen and Liam for sharing your beautiful celebration with us, and to Primalux Photography for sending this amazing wedding our way.
