When a wedding florist gets married, you know the florals are going to be incredible, but in the case of today's real wedding, every single detail, from the bridal style and the fun wedding dress code, to the elegant personal touches and the non-traditional wedding party, is so, so inspiring! Louise and Ruairi have been together since they were teenagers (you'll spot their son, Cillian, who played the role of Best Boy, in the images below!) so they had lots to draw on for their big day at the beautiful Co. Fermanagh wedding venue. As you'll see in the dreamy photography by Colin Colleran, the captured day was absolutely sensational, so let's not delay a second more!
Louise and Ruairi tell us that they've known each other since they were 19! "We were in our first year at university - I was in Liverpool, he was in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne," Louise remembers. "The very first time we laid eyes on each other was a chance meeting in the kitchen of my flat share one Sunday morning. Ruairi and his flatmate, Ross, had travelled down to Liverpool for the weekend and had been out the night before with my flatmate David, and the pair of them had slept in our kitchen. We got chatting and realised we had lots of mutual friends, since we'd gone to secondary school in the same town back home in Fermanagh. Later we worked out that we'd actually stood at the same bus stop for a couple of years when we were at school, but never noticed each other!"
Later that night, they both ended up in the same pub, O'Neills. "Ruairi came over right away and we picked up where we'd left off. We were inseparable the whole night. It felt like we'd always known each other. Naturally, after O'Neill's, I dragged him to G-Bar and subjected him to a night of dancing to Proud Mary under a massive glitter ball. At the end of the night, he went in for the kiss and that was it. The rest is history, as they say!"
Years later, Ruairi proposed during the couple's babymoon, when Louise was seven months pregnant. Louise tells us, "We were heading out for dinner on the second night of the trip and, despite my protests (it was lashing rain/sleet and blowing a gale and I was starving!), Ruairi insisted we ‘swing by the castle’ since we hadn’t gotten a chance to see it during the day. When we got up there, there wasn’t a soul around (who’d be mad enough to be up there on a night like that!?), just the pair of us huddling together in the doorway to try to shelter from the elements. Ruairi said, ‘Step back there and take a photo of me in the doorway,’ so I took out my phone... He dropped to one knee and pulled out the ring!"
Louise's Granny was her Matron of Honour on the day - isn't that just the loveliest idea!? In fact, the couple generally bunked tradition when it came to their bridal party. Louise tells us, "Although I didn’t have any bridesmaids, my two best friends assumed important roles on the day: one read our chosen poem ‘The Giraffe and the Monkey’ during the ceremony, and the other stayed back as our guests were seated so she could fix my veil before I walked down the aisle. Ruairi’s best mate presented the rings during the ceremony." Follow Your Arrow Films were behind the video lens on the day, and no doubt captured every personal touch and special moment!
The couple had a legal marriage ceremony at the Town Hall a few days before the wedding, so hired an entertainer to lead their symbolic ceremony on the day. Louise says, "We wrote the entire script for our wedding ourselves, including our vows, which we didn’t show to one another beforehand so that everything was a nice surprise. Let’s just say it was emotional!"
The couple also included a rose bush-planting ritual in their ceremony. Louise tells us, "Together we planted a David Austen rose bush, ‘Sophy’s Rose’, that we now have growing at home and that will stay with us for all of our married days together, one from which we can give cuttings to our children and grandchildren so that our love legacy lives on!" OK, I'm officially tearing up!
The couple tell us that great food was their number one priority for their big day. "Second to that it was that the day had to be authentic and full of meaning," Louise says. "We wanted the day to just scream 'Louise and Ruairi' so that meant lots of thoughtful touches and surprises for our guests along the way. We never wanted a ‘textbook’ wedding and were keen to see which norms we could break as we went along with our planning."
It sounds like this couple fell in love with their wedding venue instantly! "Tully Mill was perfect, in both its size and its look - it’s a small restaurant tucked away in the forestry on the outskirts of an estate with a rustic, homely feel. Locally, it's famous for its amazing, locally-sourced food, fabulous food presentation (think very pretty plates of food!) and outstanding service. I had gotten to know the owner, John Roche, when I worked at the neighbouring National Trust property and to be honest, we choose Tully Mill as much for the owner as we did for how the venue looked or for where it was situated. We just had 100% confidence in John and the team and knew that they would pour their heart and soul into creating our perfect day for us. And they did!"
As Louise is herself a wedding florist, the flowers on her own big day were clearly very important! She explains, "Our wedding flowers, which provided the main colour injection for the day (since there were no bridesmaids!) comprised mainly of scented garden roses, foxgloves and delphiniums (my favourites) in both jewel and pastel tones."
Louise describes the couple's wedding as a "super laid-back, informal affair, with a back-yard wedding kind of feel." Asked to describe the aesthetic inspiration for the wedding, she tells us they were going for a "vintage rose garden with a kind of 1920s luxe vibe."
The couple had some great ideas for giving their wedding that luxurious, vintage feel. "For stationery and other bits of venue décor, antique gold was the accent colour," Louise says. "Velvet ribbons on the pew ends and bouquets, velvet suit jackets for the Groom and Best Boy (our two-year-old son) and other bits of velvet décor provided a warm and luxurious feel to the day. The main dining room was filled with lots of candlelight (Ester & Erik candles in shades of pink and blue) and the reception generally felt warm, cosy and relaxed."
The couple did something unique with their dress code, asking all their female guests to wear blue! "We had a cute little insert that went along with our invitation saying ‘Boys, your favourite suit will do, girls please be our something blue’, and all the blue dresses made for a fab bouquet-toss photo at the end of the evening," Louise says. This has to be the most fun wedding dress code we've ever featured on the site!
Ruairi made the couple's cornhole game especially for the wedding. The couple also had a mobile cocktail bar after dinner, which provided guests with 'His & Hers' cocktails; French Martinis and Cuba Libre.
The couple included so many personal touches, it's impossible to list them all! Louise says, "There was lots of ‘going against the grain’, from the place we chose for the ceremony (the first couple ever to say their vows in the Rose Garden at Florence Court), to the fact we had no bridal party (just my Granny as Matron of Honour), that our dance floor was outside under a setting summer sun and framed by the twinkling fairy lights of Tully Mill and that our two-year-old son walked his mummy up the aisle (with his Grandad in tow!)."
Louise and Ruairi have some really solid advice to offer engaged couples. "If you ever find yourself saying, ‘Well, we have to have this/do it this way/have X person playing X role’, stop. There are no rules. This is your day and yours alone. You'll never get a do-over so make sure you can look back and say ‘we did it our way’ and be happy knowing that you genuinely wouldn’t change a thing. You don’t have to do things ‘by the book’ (unless you want to of course!) and the world will not stop turning if you decide to break with tradition." Here, here!
For their honeymoon, the couple spent ten nights at Sandals, an all-inclusive resort in Grenada, an island in the Caribbean. Louise tells us, "The food and service at Sandals was like nothing we’d ever experienced before. We were treated like royalty the entire time we were there, we enjoyed a honeymoon without one single hitch and that was in large part thanks to Sandals itself (we booked everything with them directly). We hope to go back to the same resort for one of our milestone wedding anniversaries!"
Thanks so much to Louise and Ruairi for sharing their gorgeous wedding with us, and to Colin Colleran for providing the beautiful imagery! There are even more photographs to swoon over in the gallery below.
