Beauty Hack: How to Even Out Tan Lines

Help is at hand for a speedy fade or clever cover up!

A nice, even glow is what most brides and bridesmaids want for a wedding. But engaging sunbathing in the weeks leading up to the big day, or not slathering on the SPF on sunny days, means you run the risk of getting pesky tanlines. With so many hen parties abroad in sunny spots like Portugal and Ibiza, unless you're wearing a strapless bikini or swimsuit, you might end up with noticeable tan lines on your shoulders, arms, chest and neck. Not great for wedding day photos! But the good news is that there are a few ways that you can even out unsightly tan lines before you walk up the aisle.

How To Prevent Tan Lines

Needless to say the best way to tackle tanlines, is not to get tanned, or worse burned. Don't forget, all tanning is sun damage, so really think about being skin safe in the sun. Try your best not to get caught out by unexpected UV exposure, especially a sunny day that might cause sunburn to your decollete or shoulders. The best way to do this is to get into a good morning routine, where you apply SPF to these areas. Also carry SPF in your bag for top ups later in the day. We like A solid sunscreen like Shiseido's Clear Suncare Stick SPF 50+ €35 and Coola Classic Stick Sunscreen SPF 30+ Coconut, €25.99. Both are transparent and very water-resistant protective sunblocks you can use quickly to prevent burning on the face or body.

How To Quickly Fade Existing Lines

Tan lines take a long to fade by themselves but to speed up the process you can use an AHA body lotion, toner or body wash. An AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) skincare product is usually made of glycolic or lactic acid, and most often used on the face to exfoliate and boost glow, and there are body versions available too. They gently dissolve the upper layer of skin that causes dullness, and rapidly fade any existing marks on your shoulders or bust faster than just waiting for them to shed of their own accord. It's a good idea to keep on top of your body exfoliation and conditioning routine. At least once a week, use a scrub or body brush to slough away dull, dead skin cells and follow with a body lotion to keep the skin hydrated and healthy-looking. The perfect base for a faux glow!

Get a Spray Tan

A lot of brides and their bridesmaids prefer to get a professional spray tan for their wedding, and it's best to book a trial to see how the shade will look beforehand. White and pastels can wash out paler skin tones and a quick layer of tan can make your skin pop against your dress. Self-tan works on all skin tones to make the skin look healthier, it counteracts any ashiness in deeper tones and diminishes cooler tones on lighter skin. Talk to your spray tan professional about the depth of colour you want for your big day, and ask for tips on exfoliation and how to deal with the tan as it fades. Your skin will thank you for staying out of the sun!

Tackle it With Self-Tan

You don't have to get a professional spray tan, at-home tanning is just as good if you are confident with self-tan. In the case of tan lines, you could apply self-tan directly onto the paler parts using an eyeshadow brush in one session and leave it to dry and develop over six to eight hours. On the following day, apply self-tan to the whole body, this should diminish the look of those tan lines dramatically. If you are new to self-tan it's best to try out a few shades and brands to discover your favourite. For a wedding day bronze we like the tanning effects of Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Mousse in Medium, €23.45 and Bondi Sands Self-Tanning Lotion in Dark, €17.45.

Use Body Makeup on the Big Day

As a last resort, you could use body makeup if tan lines are obvious and you are wearing a strapless gown. For this, you need a product that is non-transferable and water-resistant so it won't stain your dress. Top buys include MAC's Studio Face & Body Foundation, €42 and Estee Lauder's Double Wear Maximum Cover Camouflage Makeup for Face & Body, €44.95. Both are very water-resistant, do not budge and will 'fill in' tan lines easily. To use, apply along the length of the lines with a small makeup brush and repeat if necessary. Allow to dry for at least 15-20 minutes before dressing. But do ask your makeup artist to help you out on the day!
