Like it or loathe it, technology has seeped its way into every aspect of our day-to-day lives, making so many things faster, easier and simpler to accomplish. Weddings are no different. A technology-enhanced or "Plugged-in" wedding (as they're known in America) is a trend that is beginning to be adopted at Irish weddings and sure why not? Not everyone's cup of tea, but if spend your days flitting between instagram, facebook and twitter, are addicted to your fitbit, and are debating the merits of Uber and Hailo over pints on a Friday, then it's natural that tech should play a role in the day. We've already covered the best apps for use in wedding planning, but today we're all about the Wedding Day itself, so here are our 13 Best Apps for the Wedding Day.
A DIY Wedding Album Using Tech...
1. Instagram
If you're a share-everything kinda person, then social media will be at the heart of the day. Start by creating a hashtag, share it with all your guests and encourage them to use it if they use any of the sharing apps mentioned below. This means all posts are easy to search for across the platforms. First among the social media apps, is my favourite of all: Instagram. Encourage your guests to instagram their wedding snaps, including the wedding hashtag, and the next day you'll be treated with a collection of pictures from all different stages and angles of your wedding. www.instagram.com
2. Wed Pics
If sharing openly on social media isn't your thing, but you still want to collect the guests pictures, then you've gotta get Wed Pics. The modern day equivalent of leaving disposable cameras on each table, Wed Pics is a simple website/app for sharing wedding pics. Sign up, invite guests by sharing your ID and everyone can now easily share their pictures of the day. If some of your guests don't have a smart phone they can still snap away, then upload their images to the Wed Pics site using your individual wedding ID. www.wedpics.com
3. Eversnap
A very similar premise, with Eversnap you share a unique ID with your guests and collect all the images in one online wedding album. Eversnap can also collect videos of your wedding for you and if you give EverSnap your wedding hashtag they can gather all Instagram posts for you too! www.geteversnap.com
Creating a Video with a Difference...
4. Hyperlapse
For wedding videos with a difference get your more creative friends to download the Instagram related app Hyperlapse - a really cool app that captures high-quality time lapse videos even while in motion, perfect for a first dance or other memorable wedding moments.
5. Vyclone
Vyclone is another really impressive app perfect for weddings. Vyclone merges together videos that you and others record while at the same event (aka your wedding!) resulting in an automatically edited video with multiple camera angles. www.vyclone.com
Entertainment & Digital Decor
6.Digital Décor
Not really an app per se, but if you and your partner are creative in the digital design department, then take inspiration from Kerry & Kev or Cathy & Lisa who used a projector to create stunning décor for their ceremonies. This could equally be done for the reception venue to project images, video or a live instagram/twitter feed (really one for the tech-nerds!). This little one is the one we have in the office, it fits in your hand and has great resolution. Available from www.pixmania.ie
7. Evernote
For most, speeches insight terror so ease the pain using handy apps like Evernote. A note management system this app can help you with your wedding speech: you can store all your anecdotes and thank yous here, making sure they're only a small click or swipe away if the nerves get too much and your mind goes blank. Evernote would also be super handy for planning in the run up to the big day. www.evernote.com
8. Spotify
For your music create yourself a Spotify playlist to replace a DJ or wedding band. If you have a friend who is a music aficionado you can leave them in charge of this. Spotify is now totally free so this is a great way of cutting expense, plus you have absolute control of the tunes. I mean if it's good enough for the super stylish Scarlett and Tim...
9. iPad Games For Kids
If there's going to be kids at your wedding and you have a few iPads at your disposable set up a kids corner or area with your iPads loaded up with some fun apps to play with (ask their parents what are their current faves.) We love the interactive games from Kizzu or if you want to get them in on the photography download Face Juggler and I can guarantee they'll have hours of amusement.
Using Tech to Connect with Faraway Guests...
10. Skype
Increasingly friends and family are emigrating so if quite a few loved ones can't make it set up a group Skype for the ceremony so they can experience a part of the day. www.skype.com
11. Facetime
For a more one on one experience (and slightly more discreet) you could have a few of your guests Facetimeing those who aren't there. This is a particularly nice idea if you relations who are ill or elderly that can't make it but would love to see you on the day.
12. UStream
Sometimes ceremony spaces can be amazing but just that bit too small to hold all your guests. Take inspiration from Charlotte and James and set up a screen in another area of your venue where you can stream your ceremony for larger amounts of guests. Ustream is a free and simple way to do this - all you need is an account and camera. www.ustream.tv
Getting Home Safely...
13. Hailo & Uber
If you're having a city wedding, then one of the taxi apps, Hailo or Uber, will be really useful for your guests. Hailo is now available in Galway and Cork as well as Dublin and if you've used it before you know it's excellent for getting a taxi super quick. Uber is another great similar service (but only available in Dublin). Hailo recently launched wedding packages in Toronto, we'll let you know if we hear of something similar here. www.hailoapp.com or www.uber.com
One Fab Day Tip:
You will be too busy on your own wedding day to be sharing updates so if you want to keep everyone online updated, or plan on using any of the apps during the wedding day, entrust a great friend, or groomsman to do the honours on your behalf, you should be having fun!
