A First Dance Outside The Stag's Head: Jayne & Eoin

A no-frills bash that's full of surprises and devilment!

For me, a Dublin city wedding represents the height of romance and fun, but, as much as I like to fawn over this type of celebration, I've never seen one quite like Jayne and Eoin's big day. This enchanting, faff-free bash epitomises the spontaneous feel that makes city weddings feel so special. In fact, one of the defining moments of this wedding - the first dance in Dame Lane - was totally unplanned! Jayne and Eoin's big day took them from their wee cottage in Stoneybatter to the glamorous surroundings of City Hall, to the Stag's Head for al fresco pints and onwards to one of our favourite Dublin city wedding venues, Medley. Leanne Keaney Photography captured the day beautifully, so let's take a closer look!

Jayne and Eoin tell us that they first crossed paths on a night out in Dublin. "We met randomly in Garage Bar on a really hot summer's evening. Neither of us had planned on going out but had our arms twisted by friends. We were introduced by a friend of Eoin's and spent the night chatting and laughing together. We kept buying each other drinks and when Eoin's friends eventually left, he pretended they were still inside so that he could stay on! We swapped numbers and chatted for weeks before we finally went on a proper date."

Eoin popped the question on a beach in West Cork during a January getaway. "On the walk back up the beach, he called my name, and when I turned around, he was on one knee with the ring in his hand!" Jayne remembers. "He had to repeat himself a few times, because I thought he was messing! It's all a bit of a blur to be honest, I just remember telling him to get up and stop messing because people could see him! Once he finally got it across to me what he was doing, I was in such shock, he had to remind me to say yes. I never saw it coming because we had never discussed getting married or engaged in any serious way, we were both happy out as we were. It was a genuine surprise proposal with a beautiful ring chosen for me. It couldn't have been better!"

How cute is the couple's cottage!? "Being able to get ready in my own home was lovely," Jayne says. "I had my sisters and parents in our little cottage in Stoneybatter that morning and friends were coming and going, bringing coffees and breakfast. We created a lovely little beehive and had great fun!"

From the beginning, this couple were determined to keep things simple - case in point, their wedding party comprised just one bridesmaid and one groomsman.

Jayne describes the wedding as "a big party in town! We were able to agree from the start that we wanted a city wedding with no frills that people could just join in with and enjoy. We put all of our efforts in to creating the atmosphere of a great party through the music and food and the layout of the day. We spent very little time away from our guests and our wonderful photographer whizzed us through town to some important spots and got us straight back to our guests."

Jayne and Eoin quickly settled on two priorities for the big day; music and food. "We had gone through lots of weddings by then and we would always discuss the music and food afterwards - it can make or break a wedding. Very few people notice the finer details, but everyone will discuss the party itself! We always tried to imagine what we were doing from the guests' point of view to make sure that the day was as fun for them as it would be for us. I think this helped keep us on track also and not get too caught up on smaller details that only we would notice." This is such a great tip!

As much as we adore a short city wedding dress, we love that this pair went for full-on glamour on the big day! Jayne's bombshell wedding gown is a custom piece from Covet, while Eoin's suit is a Hugo Boss number.

Jayne and Eoin may have kept details to a minimum, but their celebration was full of personal touches. "The best man organised wooden love hearts with our initials on them and arrows directing people to the venue, which was a surprise. He got up super early that morning and put them up all over town. They were a lovely little touch that we weren't expecting! There is still a love heart outside the Stag's Head that says 'Pint?' I love that it's still there."

We have to admit that this impromptu dance party stole our hearts! "The dancing on Dame Lane was not organised and became the most memorable part of the day," Jayne tells us. "Walking through town in your wedding gear is great fun. Everyone wants to congratulate you and when we arrived, there was a band playing outside the Mercantile - the Luna Boys - and they basically made us have our first dance in the street with our 100 guests and about 200 strangers cheering us on. It was a fantastic moment!"

Jayne offers a great tip for for staying calm during wedding planning. "Don't tell people what you're doing until you've booked it. People are full of opinions and like to tell you what they think is the right way to do things, but trust your instincts. I did my best to book something as soon as I was comfortable with it, and not overthink it or discuss it with anyone, bar Eoin. That way, I felt we were trusting our instincts and it was usually too late for someone to try change my mind!" We couldn't agree more!

Medley really suited the couple's aesthetic, as well as their stress-free approach. "I actually knew it was the right venue the moment I went in," Jayne says. "It's city chic inside and you could use it as a blank canvas to really create a theme, or you can just let the venue shine on its own. There were no frills, however, if you wanted to add frills, you could! The guys were really laid-back and were happy for us to throw whatever kind of party we wanted. They promised great food at restaurant quality, which can be hard to get for big numbers, but they did not disappoint!"

Eoin put together this incredible David Bowie-inspired table plan, which is easily one of my favourite details from the day. He also selected the couple's official first dance song, as Jayne loved the idea of being surprised on the night! "He chose David Bowie's Let's Dance and he got it so right!" she says. "When I heard it, I went wild, so our guests just joined in, which got the night off to the right start. It's impossible not to join in when the bride and groom are having as much fun as we did!"

This wedding has got us smiling from ear to ear! At this point, we've got to say thanks so much to Jayne and Eoin for letting us peek inside their big day, and to Leanne Keaney for sharing the gorgeous photographs, of course!
