We love when a Dublin City Hall wedding lands at the One Fab Day office. While it's become a common wedding venue, it's amazing how different each version feels! And today's real wedding is no different! Eilionoir and Eoin went for a low-key and super relaxed vibe with a reception in Fallon and Byrne and a jaunt around Dublin's fair city in the sunshine, with the talented Elisha Clarke on hand to capture all the lovely moments!
Eilionoir and Eoin met as students and have had quite a journey on their lovestory...We met when we were both studying law in UCC, en route from the Old Bar to the New Bar on the last day of classes before Christmas. We’ve stayed together ever since, through studying in different countries, moving in together, taking jobs in different cities, commuting between Dublin and Galway and finally, deciding to get married so we could have a big party to celebrate with all the people we love.
From the start, Eilionoir and Eoin knew they wanted a low-key wedding. They focused on what was important to them on the big day... Apart from ‘low key’ our main priority was not to have to work too hard on the wedding, so no major DIY projects, or adding extra elements to the day that we felt we didn’t need. We thought hard about the things we cared about, the photography, the ceremony, the food and wine, the band and the speeches, and put effort into those, and let the rest go.
The couple chose Dublin City Hall for their ceremony...City Hall is a beautiful civic space with lots of natural light, we loved it the minute we walked in. It was important to us that all of our guests would be able to attend the civil ceremony, and it’s a great location in the city centre.
The couple asked their wedding party to wear their own outfits for the ceremony, and don't they look dapper?
When it came to her bridal look, Eilionoir had some very thoughtful friends... Three of my close friends were conspiring for weeks to make sure I had something old, new, borrowed and blue – including a gorgeous antique brooch that I pinned to my bouquet. Plus a ‘borrowed’ miniature Infant of Prague that we put on top of the fire escape in the hotel room and it must have worked too, because the sun shone all day. That Infant of Prague must be busy during wedding season in Dublin!
We didn’t want anything too sentimental in our ceremony, rather something that spoke to both of us, and was suggestive, rather than dogmatic, about love and commitment. In the end we chose two lovely pieces by Irish poets – 'Begin' by Brendan Kennelly, and 'Sméara Dubha' by Louis De Paor. Readings from Irish poets in such a historic building really adds such a nice element to a city centre wedding.
We love all the details of Dublin City Hall that Elisha captured. It's such an amazing building, filled with hidden architectural details that can speak for themselves if you don't want to do too much decorating.
The couple had a drinks reception, catered by the Right Catering Company at City Hall before heading over to their reception. They chose Fallon and Byrne because they were looking for great food and wine, and room for a band and dancing. Plus it's a hop and skip from City Hall!
We love the details in Eilionoir's dress, by Alice Temperley from Costume in Dublin. It's intricate embroidery and beautiful neckline (in front and back) makes it just that bit fancy for a non-traditional wedding dress. Even though Eilionoir didn't want to DIY too much for their big day, she did make the buttonholes, bouquets and her hair clips!
Eilionoir and Eoin decided to do something a little non-traditional and only hire a photographer for their ceremony and a short time after instead of the whole day. So the lovely Elisha Clarke captured the cermony and the romantic stroll around Dublin before the newlyweds headed to their reception in Fallon and Byrne.
Doesn't that look like the face of a happy newly married man? He looks like he owns Dublin city now!
Elisha captured the wonderful afternoon light in St Stephen's Green and Eilionoir's dress looked perfect in the Summer sun!
Eilionoir's bouquet was a 'do it yourself' number with flowers from Smithfield Market. It looks like it could have been picked from the hedges in Stephen's Green. It's really a wonderful version of the wildflower bouquet trend we've been seeing so much lately.
Eilionoir has great advice for brides planning their wedding.. Ask people for help the earlier the better. Some people will say no, and that might be hard, but it’s for the best in the end because you don’t want to have pressured people into doing things they’re not really comfortable with. Other people will come through for you in ways you never even knew you needed.
These two were able to keep their wedding low-key and just their style, and here's how Eilionoir suggests making that happen...Basically, just figure out what is important to you and then let the rest go. I found it a bit hard not to get bogged down in ‘what normally happens at weddings’ and also when there is so much inspiration on the web – it’s great in one sense, but looking at other people’s weddings can become overwhelming pretty quickly! Luckily, I had a very level-headed groom who had no idea what ‘normally happens at weddings’ and proceeded on the basis of what would make the day enjoyable and easy-going for us and our guests, which was really the best starting point for decisions.
Congratulations Eilionoir and Eoin on their beautiful Dublin City wedding!
Of course a big thank you to Elisha Clarke for sharing her work with us at One Fab Day! To see more of Elisha Clarke's work pop over to her website elishaclarke.com
