This morning's gorgeous Beach Engagement Shoot by Christina Brosnan was just the start of a beachy wedding themed few days on OneFabDay. It is June after all we should all be getting into the sunny Summer mood! Today we have a simple beach & rustic themed DIY project to give a little bit of an outdoorsy beach vibe to your wedding reception table decor - DIY Terrarium.
If you've never heard of a Terrarium, the quick version is that they're a mini-environment within a glass container creating a dry micro-climate for growing plants - essentially like an aquarium but a dry version. Usually they contain sand, soil, leaves and plants that thrive in dry environments like cacti or moss.
If you're having a woodland or beachy theme wedding terrariums are perfect for adding that little spark of originality and interest. And they're environmentally friendly and can double a wedding favours if you want to give them away to guests afterwards.
Inspired by these pretty examples from ErinEverAfter, PopDeluxe and Green Wedding Shoes we thought we'd try our hands at creating a simple terrarium using what you find in your garden and around the house, and this is what we came up with...
A Beachy DIY Jam Jar Terrarium
For this simple DIY project all you need is:
- Glass Jars
- Twine
- Spray Glue/Mounting Spray
- Ivy
- Moss
- Sand
How I made the Mini-Terrarium:
Washed and dried the jar removing the sticky label.
Then wound twine around the mouth of the jar to disguise the ridges at the lip and give it a rustic/seaside look.
Filled the bottom of the jar with sand, popped in some moss and a sprig of ivy.
The little scroll is a mini-menu or you could put in a tealight for a candle lit evening glow (be careful of the ivy and the candle)
Loads of scope for creativity
This took version took 10 minutes and was based on what was around the garden. You are limited only by your own imagination - everything from a flowers and shells to little lego-men will look cute in a lush terrarium. Play around with some ideas when planning yours...
Some ways to jazz up your Terrarium Centrepieces:
- Collect a variety of jars of different sizes to place in a cluster in the table centre on a round table, or along the centre for a long table.
- Using fancy glassware such as old chemists jars or carafes you can make really interesting shapes.
