Mason jars are one of the biggest DIY trends of the moment - you see them everywhere! They can be a little hard to find in Ireland without having to shell out big money for them. But do you know what's a great substitute? Jam jars! Strip off the labels and add a little paint, and you've got a perfect mason jar look-alike. Here's one way to DIY them for your wedding or occasion.

Here's what you will need:

  • Empty jam jar
  • Painter's tape
  • A few pots of sample paint from the hardware or acrylic paint from the craft store
  • Paintbrush
  • Ribbon
  • Printed tags (we've got a printable for you to use!)

What to do:

First, peel the label off of your jam jar. I took the lazy route and let mine soak overnight in the sink. Then I used the scratchy side of my sponge under running hot water to get all of the glue off.

Dry off your jam jar and get your painter's tape ready. You could also use masking tape. I cut mine into thin strips because I wanted small triangles. You could skip this step if you don't mind larger triangles.

Tape off your jar, creating stripes and triangles by overlapping the strips of tape. Don't worry about being too exact. I taped off stripes and then added little pieces of tape to create triangles out of one of the stripes. Press the tape down tightly.

Then simply paint in your stripes and triangles. I try to paint away from the tape - if you paint toward it, you might get paint under the tape and your lines will be a little smudgy. I used a sample pot of paint from Woodies DIY in a pretty pink and a tube of craft acrylic from Tesco in shimmery gold. I painted two coats over the tape to make sure the colour was nice and bright.

Once the paint is dry (I waited about 30 minutes), carefully peel off the tape. If the paint has smudged under the tape, you can use your craft knife to peel it away.

Tie a ribbon and attach one of our cute (free!) printable tags, and drop a lit votive candle inside.

You've just transformed your jam jar into a cute favour for your guests to take home!
