I feel like 2013 is well underway now, feels like we were never on holidays at all - but sure work is hardly a chore when you have beautiful weddings like today's to write about: Marianne and Rory, who tied the knot this Summer in Derry. Marianne is positively Princess-like in her beautiful one-shoulder wedding gown and Rory looks like the man who has won the lotto. The couple had lots of help from friends and family in bringing together their perfect one fab day... all caught on camera by Wrapped in Plastic Photography, whose work we're delighted to introduce to you for the first time today.
We met 11 years ago in John Moore’s student union in Liverpool through my good friend Gabrielle. It took her a year to match make us because Rory couldn’t remember what I looked like. This was back in the days before Facebook and camera phones she eventually posted him a photograph of me.
I was mortified when I found out, but I can hardly hold it against her now!
After going out for eight and half years we had an ongoing joke where Rory would say ‘when are you going to ask me to marry you then?’ and I would say ‘when are you going to ask me?’. He eventually gave in and proposed at the Balcón de Europa- a cliff top in Nerja Spain with a plastic ring from a souvenir shop. My wee sister Jeananne was in on the plan and had advised him to let me choose my own ring.
I told you she was like a princess bride...
My dress had 50s feel and my sister Jeananne found the most perfect pale pink silk dress bridesmaid dress in a North London vintage shop. It had a gorgeous bell shape which echoed mine. We had it restored using fabric from Broadwick Silks in Soho. Everyone who saw her dress fell in love with it. Jeanie has a brilliant eye for colour and paired it with pistachio green suede shoes and matching clutch bag. She was the most perfect bridesmaid and tended to me all day.
Marianne's Mum is on the board of governors at St Cecilia’s College in Derry so she arranged for the choir to sing Gospel songs during the mass. "It was absolutely beautiful. They sang ‘Wade in the Water’ when we were signing the register as we are now The Floods! And we came back down the aisle to an African Gospel song complete with drums."
Marianne opted for a DIY wedding cake, buying three iced fruit cakes from Tesco for £35, and decorating them with Guipure lace and antique Belleek china tea cups that originally belonged to her Great Aunts Annie and Evie. Of course her uncle nicknamed it a ‘cup’ cake (there's always one!). Framed photos of her parents and Rory's parents on their wedding days were an added surprise for both couples. Marianne also collected 54 mismatched vintage tea cups and put four on every table, filled with boiled sweets, a few were borrowed from her nana Maisie, who was too ill to come to the wedding so it was nice to be able to have her with them in a way.
"I went all out on the arts and crafts and made 140 moustaches on sticks and stamped everyone’s name out on doilies for the place settings. I also made top hat sweets out of marshmallows and white chocolate and wrapped them up in little frilly doily parcels tied with lace as favours. It took ages, so I invited four friends round for gin and tonics on the week of the wedding and put them to work!"
In honour of Marianne and Rory's friend Gabrielle's special role in bringing the day about, Rory's father made a presentation during the speeches - a bow and arrow for her work as cupid.
What advice would you give to brides and grooms planning their day? Invest in a good photographer. After it’s all over the pictures are all you have left when it’s all over (apart from your life partner!). The day flies in so fast and it’s really easy to miss bits. I found out about our photographer Lisa Byrne of Wrapped in Plastic Photography when Glamour magazine did a full page article on her a couple of years ago. She has a lovely way about her and just quietly got on with doing her thing. I loved the way she captured all the different relationships and every picture tells a wee story. We wanted to enjoy the day and spend time as much time with our guests as possible and Lisa totally got that. I love the pictures and I’ve looked at them a million times.
Congratulations Marianne and Rory! Hope you had a wonderful first Christmas as a married couple. Huge thanks for sharing your day with us, and of course to Lisa of Wrapped in Plastic Photography - this is our first time featuring her work, so make sure to pop over to www.wrappedinplasticphotography.com to see lots more...
