'Joy and Love' Rebecca & Colum's Colourful Belfast Wedding

Gold dinosaurs and gorgeous styling

When the bride in a real wedding owns a bridal boutique, you just know her wedding day look is going to be pretty special! As you're about to see below, Rebecca of Curvy Chic Bridal styled herself - and her wedding party - beautifully but she went one further, making a rallying cry for plus size brides everywhere to feel as gorgeous as they deserve to on their big day. Needless to say, we are here for it! New Zealand native Rebecca married her Belfast beau Colum in a colourful celebration at Malone Lodge Hotel that featured lots of the couple's favourite things; Jedis and Stormtroopers, dinosaurs and flamingos, bright flowers and beautiful roast potatoes - and of course, all their family and friends. Creative Flux Photography captured the newlyweds' day, taking in the Belfast Botanic Gardens en route.

Just a sneak peek, but we're already in love with Rebecca!

Already enjoying this accessory situation!

There aren’t enough applause emojis in the world for Rebecca’s pep talk to plus size brides, “As a plus size bride, I would like to assure my fellow plus size brides to be, you will feel beautiful, I know it can be scary and we often dodge photos where we can, but I love my pictures, even though you can see my double chin and bingo wings, I adore the joy and love you can feel from our pictures, I promise you, your partner adores you just how you are, and there are amazing, modern and beautiful dresses out there in sample sizes that will fit and suit you, (like Curvy Chic Bridal!). Don’t let being plus size stop you from loving every minute of planning your day.” Now, let's all shout this from the rooftops!

Now those are some colourful blooms!

Colum and Rebecca have a sweet, meant-to-be love story, “Colum and I met when he came across my profile on Twitter, he invited himself along to a gig I was going to with some mutual friends,” explains Rebecca, “I found out he was only 18 (I was 23!) and we went our separate ways, he headed off to Manchester to uni and every time he came home would wine and dine me. Four years later, we finally got together, and what a good decision that was!”

When your heart is pounding with the neves of it all!

Colum proposed to Rebecca in January 2017 while they were away for the weekend in Lusty Beg, “After dinner we went for a walk around the lake, and Colum got down on one knee on the pier, unfortunately I was wearing gloves and it was dark, so I didn’t see the ring for a little while! But it’s perfect!”

The couple chose Theo as their superstar page boy while Elen and Faith did an incredible job as flower girls. Holly the chihuahua couldn't make the ceremony, but she did come along later for some pictures!

For Colum and Rebecca, their number one tip to other couples is to relax, “Don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s just not worth it and on the day you just won’t care. This is your wedding, do it your way! The best piece of advice I got was to take a minute during the service to just take it all in, everyone that is there for you guys, how amazing your other half looks and your friends, this will be the calmest part of your day.”

As Rebecca and Colum are from different parts of the world, having their most important loved ones with them on the day was at the top of their wish list. “We made cuts in other areas so we could make sure the people we wanted there could be there. We wanted everyone to be really relaxed and feel comfortable, and that it was a good balance of both of our personalities. Our wedding was just all about love and our friends and family being together. Two of my bridesmaids are from New Zealand and it was the first time we had all been together for 15 years!”

Looks like the sun came out just in time!

How pretty are these floral embellished skirts and colourful flower crowns?

A bunch of babes in blush!

Rebecca tells us about the process behind styling her bridesmaids, “I dressed the bridesmaids in dresses that suited them individually rather than all the same dress. They all chose their dress, their hair and makeup, shoes, everything. We wanted them to feel a part of the day and know that we love and appreciate them for who they are. We were more than happy for everyone’s tattoos and piercings and things that make them who they are to be on show.”

Another clever tip from this pair, don’t forget the refreshments! “Make some snack packs for your bridal party and photographer/videographer, you’ll all need a snack and our suppliers really appreciated it. Oh and book your suppliers as soon as you set your date, all the best people book up years in advance!”

The Botanic Gardens, not far from the hotel, was the perfect pitstop for photos between the ceremony and reception.

The couple’s wedding inspiration was something of a mish mash, “A few people asked us what our theme was, but really it was just stuff we like! I love flamingos so we have a tropical candy table with light up flamingos and cacti, and we love wild flowers, Fleuriste just went above and beyond and created flowers beyond what we ever could have imagined.”

The couple added some romance to their reception with the table names, “We named all our tables LOVE in different languages that mean something to us. German, my maid of honour lives in Germany; Maori, for our NZ family; Irish and Scots for our groomsmen; Welsh for our best man etc.,” explains Rebecca. “I also made flower wreaths and our table plan and all the signage at the wedding, the flower wreaths quickly became flower crowns and beards at the reception!”

The couple have planned an amazing multi-stop honeymoon, “We are heading off to Philadelphia, Orlando, Miami and then a cruise around the Caribbean.”

So many gorgeous details! Thanks so much to Rebecca and Colum for sharing your day with us, and of course to Creative Flux Photography for sending it our way.
