I'm a huge fan of small weddings - living it up with a tiny gang of your most cherished people is a dream scenario in my book, which is why today's real wedding is right up my alley. Caoimhe and Fergal wanted to keep things simple for their Connemara wedding, so they planned it around their small family of three (they have the cutest little boy, Conall, who you'll soon be cooing over!) They chose their home village of Spiddal, Galway as the location, and set about putting together a seriously stylish and fuss-free day, including a sweet church ceremony, a low-key restaurant reception and a raucous after-party in their own home! They invited one of our favourite photographers, Livia Figueiredo, to document they day, and the results, I think you'll agree, are drop-dead gorgeous!
Caoimhe and Fergal's how-we-met story is more of a how-we-met saga, so they've provided us with the short version here! "We are both from An Spidéal, Co. na Gaillimhe, and have known each other for a long time. Eventually, in 2011, we realised that we needed to get it together."
There wasn't a proposal for this pair - they simply decided that it was the right time to make it official. "We had an ongoing joke before our son’s christening in January 2018 that we should get married at the same time as all the VIPs in our lives were going to be there. We enjoyed the christening day so much that we decided to stop joking around and get serious! We started planning in April and got married the following July."
Irish readers will appreciate how important the wedding-morning fry is!
The couple were lucky enough to have friends and family members helping out at every turn. "The support from all wedding guests and then extended friends and family was unbelievable. Both sets of our amazing parents, Máire, Gerry, Toni and Mártan, were a huge support. The baby Conall was doted and cared for all day by every person in attendance."
Placing a coin in the bride's shoe is one of the few wedding superstitions that we're happy to keep alive. Securing it with a Band-Aid is a clever idea from Team Caoimhe, but we wouldn't blame any bride for whipping it out as soon as the ceremony is over!
Little Conall is such a heartbreaker! One of the couple's goals for the big day was to maximise family time. "It was important to us that bride, groom and baby would stay together for the whole day," they explain. "We got ready together, travelled to the ceremony together and walked up the aisle together."
We're not sure whether this stylish lady is the mother of the bride or groom, but either way, we are obsessed with her hot pink ensemble!
Caoimhe and Fergal describe their day as "a true family affair. We had 20 wedding guests and everyone in attendance had a job to do. Father Tadgh Quinn made us feel so welcome and appreciative of the whole occasion. It really was something special."
They weren't kidding when they said that every guest had a role on the day! "Our groomsman Pádraic doubled up as a musician. We had biodegradable confetti petals hand dried by our bridesmaid Sorcha and her mother Máire. We had a hired bus driven home by our friend Jack and filled with balloons and treats by a cousin Fionnuala, and Rose’s famous scones for the after-party. The list goes on and on and on. Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimÃd." (editor's note: this translates as, "We live in the shadow of each other" and is a heartfelt expression of appreciation in the Irish language!)
We predicted that orange bridesmaids dresses would be huge this year, and it looks like we were right! The lovely orange wrap dress is from Willow in Galway, and the floral dress is a Zara find!
There's one huge advantage to getting married in Connemara - you're spoiled with pretty photo locations!
Livia's beach portraits are so pretty!
Another priority for this couple was, "to keep things nice and simple. Zero-fuss, as they say." This is key for a small wedding!
It's time to talk bridal style! Caoimhe got her chic short wedding dress from Brown Thomas Galway, and paired it with a contemporary headpiece by Emily Jean Millinery, and the cutest metallic heels from Dunnes Stores!
Caoimhe and Fergal's advice for engaged couples is short, sweet, and totally on-point. "Throw out the rule book and do things your own way," they say. We whole-heartedly agree!
For their reception, the couple picked one of their favourite restaurants, O'Grady's on the Pier in Barna village. "It ticked all our boxes – it was 10 minutes from our home, it had a beautiful setting by the sea, and there is consistently great food and excellent service. We decided to throw the after-party celebration in our home - we put the baby to bed and partied until dawn!"
After the wedding, Caoimhe, Fergal and Conall jetted off on their first family holiday, which doubled as their honeymoon! "We travelled to Brittany in France and stayed in a gorgeous town called Pont-Aven for 10 days. We had a fantastic time eating and drinking everything in sight."
This pair could not be more adorable if they tried! At this point, we have to say a massive thank-you to Caoimhe and Fergal (and Conall!) for giving us a closer look at their beautiful wedding day, and to Livia Figueiredo for sharing her amazing photographs.
