Dancing Until 6am: Deirdre & Joe's Borris House Wedding

A great big house party with lots of stylish details

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, today's real wedding was an absolute belter! Deirdre and Joe celebrated tying the knot with not one, but three parties - first, a night of drinks and chats in the local Borris pub, followed by a fun-filled wedding day at Borris House, and finally, a day-two BBQ bash in Deirdre's parents house. The day itself was bursting with bold florals and sweet personal touches, which we got a little sneak preview of via their wedding video, but thanks to these gorgeous photographs by CJ Nash, we can now pore over every last detail!

How gorgeous does Deirdre look in her two-piece!? I love that she went for vibrant colours with her bouquet, which is by The Wild Bunch and features intense shades of pink and violet.

Deirdre tells us that she met Joe while they were both studying medicine at Trinity. "We met quite early on in first year but didn’t get together until our second year there. I actually didn’t like him after an awkward encounter on the dancefloor, but I had sussed him out all wrong! Lots of my friends became his friends as well and we all still see each other all the time. We’re living in Dublin now and working away as doctors. What is really freaky is that I have a twin brother (Tom) and Joe has a twin sister (Nicole), so that makes us quite unique!"

We're huge fans of Deirdre's bridal beauty look, which was created by Gorey-based makeup studio, Making Faces. Eyeliner and a red lip is a classic combo, but this is a particularly beautiful example of it.

For the proposal, Joe whisked Deirdre off to Rome. "He got down on one knee at the Trevi Fountain after the most perfect day of amazing food and sightseeing and pulled out a ring he had been hiding from me. There’s was lots of applause and I was mortified but absolutely delighted!"

The vibrant colour palette was carried through to the bridesmaid bouquets and a gorgeous floral hoop in the Granary Barn at Borris House.

wedding ceremony reading

The couple tell us that they had a highly personal ceremony. "Our friend Mark performed it and did an amazing job," Deirdre tells us. "We had readings by our mums and our twins, and my little brother Ronan. They all chose their own readings and we heard some for the first time that day, which was lovely."

Deirdre and Joe had a very clear picture of their wedding day in their heads, right from the beginning. "We wanted it to be very chilled. We had been to a wedding a few years earlier that had a similar vibe, so the idea was to find an amazing house and make it ours for a few days. There were very few formalities, no real dress code and a very relaxed, party atmosphere. The food was incredible, the flowers were above and beyond anything I had ever imagined, and we quite literally danced all night. The poor staff at Borris House had to ask the last few if they wouldn’t mind evacuating the dance floor at 6am the following morning!"

What an epic space for a cocktail reception!

Deirdre paired Coast tops with skirts to create this stunning bridesmaids look. The silvery shade of grey really allows the florals to pop!

Joe and his pals are no slouches in the style department either! They each wore their own grey suit, but the look was cleverly tied together with matching ties and pocket squares.

Deirdre and Joe found their venue in Borris House in Co. Carlow. "We wanted a space that we could feel was a sort of home away from home. Apart from the fact that Borris is a spectacular location and looks incredible, we also had the benefit of having it exclusively for the weekend, which was really special. When I walked into the ballroom, I knew we were never going to find a more stunning location for our reception, and the granary barn was ideal for our slightly quirky ceremony."

Food forms a huge part of this couple's relationship, so naturally, they put a lot of thought into what was served on their wedding day. "Mike in Borris House told us about Eunice Power and I had heard good things about her myself. Our guests were pretty blown away by the standard of grub that was served. As well as the standard of food, the staff she has, in particular the wonderful Mai who was front of house, were so, so accommodating."

The couple also prioritised music and photography. "The day goes so quickly, so it was such a treat to have the beautiful photos and video that we got the look back on our day. Both Claire and Sheena (of Croiative Films) were a dream to work with and blended in so well to the wedding party, they were great craic getting ready that morning."

I can never resist lawn games at a wedding! Deirdre and Joe's guests were treated to a few rounds of the Swedish lawn game, Kubb.

The exposed brick and beam combo at Borris House is just so pretty! This is one wedding reception space that needs very little decorating.

The couple's peg doll cake toppers are so cute! Deirdre tells us that her aunt Caroline made their wedding cake. "It looked so professional, I was so impressed. And it tasted amazing, it was all gone by the next day!"

Deirdre's advice for engaged couples is really simple but we are 100% on board with it! "Do whatever works for you," she says. "Every couple is different and every wedding is different. There are no rules so make the day whatever you want it to be. Also, everyone is going to have an opinion on the details so don’t let those opinions sway you or put you under pressure. You’re never going to please everyone, so just make sure you’re happy with the suppliers you’ve chosen." Here, here!

The couple hosted a day-two BBQ in Deirdre's parents' house before jetting off on honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast. "We were in Sorrento and Positano and it was heaven. The sun and the food were amazing and it was relaxed, so we could just about recover from our wedding weekend."

It looks like this gang had the most amazing weekend! Thanks so much to Deirdre and Joe for giving us the inside scoop on their big day, and to CJ Nash for sharing the beautiful photographs! If you still haven't had your fix, check out Deirdre and Joe's sweet wedding film here.
