A DIY Boho Chic Wedding at Martinstown House: Hannah & Paul

The creativity of this couple is next level!

For us, the weddings that connects instantly are the ones where it is SO truly personal that you really couldn’t place any other couple in the picture. From the boho gown, the flower crowns, the dried flowers, the epic hand-crafted wooden décor, the vegan dessert table, and a best woman, – it all showed off the personalities of Hannah and Paul and it did so succinctly, beautifully and filled with whimsy and you don’t even need to scroll far to see how absolutely joy-filled their boho Martinstown House wedding was for not just them, but every single person around them.

From Hannah's epic pre-loved wedding dress find and the couple's curated Spotify playlists, to their epic DIY dried florals, cake and hand-crafted wooden wedding décor, we are totally in awe of this creative couples day and know you will be too. Capturing it all was Folklore Photography, who perfectly balanced the laidback nature of the day, the gorgeous details and the love shared between everyone.

So first things first, let's get to know our couple a little more. Bride Hannah hails from the South East of England and Groom Paul is from Dublin, Ireland. They are currently based in Buckinghamshire in England. The pair met after they both swiped right on the dating app Bumble 5 years ago. Hannah tells us, "I liked that Paul had a beard and looked outdoorsy in his photos and he liked my leafy festival crown! We met at a pub and bonded over beer and our silly sense of humour."

The proposal happened on the day the couple finalised their house purchase. Hannah fills us in, "Paul got a beautiful ring designed by Erica Jewellery: a green star sapphire framed by rowan leaves and buds with tree rings on the underside. He secretly held onto it for a while whilst we waited to complete on our house purchase. On the day we completed we decided to stay the night there on an air bed, whilst waiting for the takeaway to arrive, we popped the champagne and then Paul got down on one knee to propose.

The couple opted to do a sweet first look in the Secret Garden at Martinstown House before their ceremony.

Music was high in the list of priorities for this couple so they made sure to include all their favourites on the day. As guests entered the ceremony space at Martinstown House they were treated to a folky playlist the couple created together.

Hannah walked up the aisle to Nick Mulvey 'Fever to the Form', who she says is, "one of our favourite singers who we've seen live several times." She adds, "Our other favourites Kishi Bashi and Tallest Man on Earth were also played."

During the ceremony the couple included a ring warming ritual and hand-fasting ritual as well as gorgeous readings about nature read by family and friends. Hannah says, "My brother read "I will love you forever" from The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman which is a book that he introduced me to when I was younger and is one of my favourites. Paul's aunt read "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan which we both really love."

When planning their day, the couple wanted to create a day for their guests that was, "boho, rustic, and I hope, relaxed and fun!" Hannah adds, We really wanted it to feel relaxed, with not a lot of waiting around and to just be a big party with everyone we love. Friends and family said the venue, flowers and my dress were very me, which to me was a huge compliment as it's the style I love."

"As creative and DIY-type people, we wanted to make lots of things ourselves (especially me) and I also wanted people to be involved only
if they wanted to, luckily they did so we had lots of help. We try to live low waste so didn't want to buy a lot of new stuff for décor, we borrowed things and collected and kept it pretty simple. We both love wood and I also love wildflowers. I love greens, oranges, yellows and purples, spring and summery colours. I also love a boho aesthetic."

And the perfect venue for their relaxed, boho celebration? The wonderful Martinstown House in Co. Kildare. Hannah and Paul tell us they were drawn to the venue's relaxed charm as well as it's unique ceremony space. "We really wanted to get married outside but in Ireland the weather can be a little unpredictable. The shelter at Martinstown meant we could do this whether it rained or not. We loved the green-ness and wildness of the venue and local area. We also liked the beautiful house and how relaxed and rustic it all felt. It was stunning!", the bride says.

When asked what their favourite moments and memories from the day were, the pair tell us, "We loved doing the first look, it really helped with the nerves and helped to give us some quiet time together. We loved having a celebrant who spent time asking about our life together so the ceremony could be really personal and humorous. Having our close friends and family help with setting up the day before and morning of. The ring warming was also really special."

Hannah's dreamy ethereal wedding gown was a clever find on a wedding dress resale site. Hannah tells us, "I got it second hand on Still White and then I had the whole top part changed so I could have sleeves and a keyhole back added by seamstress Adriana Cojocaru in Milton Keynes. She managed to find a beautiful lace to go with the rest of the dress."

Hannah completed her bridal look with a flower crown she crafted herself as as well as a headband for the evening dancing. For shoes, she chose lace Converse as she says, "I sprain my ankles regularly and like to jump around when I dance so wanted something comfy!".

As well as making her own flower crown, the bride also made one for the groom's sister who was his best woman on the day. Not only that, Hannah also created the bouquets and buttonholes. "Some I grew and others I foraged and dried - we had a rotation of flowers hanging from our ceilings for weeks. I bought the rest from Atlas Flowers. My bridesmaids, sister in law and mother in law and I all put them all together which I loved," she tells us.

We're positively obsessed with that macramé bridal bouquet wrap!

Hannah sourced her lilac bridesmaids dresses from Nobody's Child, while the skirt and tops the brides' nieces wore were from Etsy. Each bridesmaid made their own crown too, making them all totally unique.

We are totally in awe of this creative couples talents. And they have even more details of their DIY projects to share, "Paul is a cabinet maker and I am a wood burning artist, so we both love wood! Paul made our ring box, a wooden sign and wooden covers for our guest book which I then wood burned designs onto. I also wood burned little table numbers and made our handfasting cord. I made half of our confetti by collecting petals for a couple months and drying them on a pan in our kitchen, after measuring it out I knew we needed more so I bought the other half from Shropshire petals. It was gorgeous!"

At the cocktail reception and dinner, Spotify playlists filled with a variety of the couples favourite songs played. The bride tells us they featured, "Bowie, some disco, indie, folk and even emo. We had fun creating them!"

Our creative couple didn't just stop at the flowers, playlists and wooden wedding décor, the talented bride also made the all-vegan wedding cake which consisted of carrot, chocolate and lemon tiers. The pressed flowers were also grown and pressed by the bride. The leftover pressed flowers were placed next to the guestbook with some tape for guests to stick them next to their messages and well wishes.

Hannah's advice for couples planning a wedding especially those planning DIY elements is this; "Try not to stress about the little things. There were a few other things I wanted to make for the day but ran out of time, but on the day I was so unbelievably happy and unstressed that nothing mattered at all. We had the biggest smiles on our faces all day. Everyone warns you that it'll go quick but I still don't think we were prepared for just how fast it would go by. I am really glad my brother and friends filmed lots because so much of it was a blur, especially the ceremony. Also, find a place that lets you party until late, because as I said it goes fast! We stumbled to bed at 4.30am very happy and very tired!

After the epic celebrations the pair headed on a minimoon to a treehouse in Sussex for some R&R. And for the big Honeymoon? The couple tells us, "We are thinking about the Dolomites next year for the real honeymoon!"
