Our real wedding couple Cathy and Bennett tied the knot in a picturesque 18th-century chapel at The Abbey in the bride's home county of Kildare. Located in the heart of Athy, the spectacular stone walled country house and landscaped courtyard served as an idyllic backdrop to the pair's dreamy special day. Featuring subtle 1920's inspired touches, an understated pastel colour palette and a nod to Beyoncé in the couple's ceremony, this is a celebration not to be missed! Adding a personal touch to their wedding day, the couple's families were involved in a myriad of ways from their homemade wedding cake to a rendition of Ave Maria at their interfaith ceremony. Wonderfully captured by Mark Donovan Photography, check out Cathy and Bennett's gorgeous September wedding below!
Before we dive into their gorgeous wedding day, let's get to know the happy couple a little bit more! While studying together in Trinity College, Cathy's future bridesmaid introduced her to Bennett, who hails from Scotland. With plenty of mutual friends, the pair got to know each other well and, after a group holiday together, they knew that they wanted to see each other every day from then on!
After 10 years together the proposal came during a trip to Co. Clare in the midst of a heatwave. The couple, who always gift each other their favourite cereals for special occasions, went on an early morning hike and, at the top of the hill, Bennett produced a box of cereal with an engagement ring inside! Cleverly, he concealed the ring inside the cereal box by opening it from the bottom and resealing it with double-sided tape!
Complete with ornate tiled floor, stained glass windows and rustic wood paneling, the breathtaking ceremony space at The Abbey is housed in a charming on-site chapel built in 1852. The couple had an interfaith ceremony which included secular readings and music combined with prayers, carried out by solemniser Rev. Brenda O'Grady.
The bride made her way up the aisle in a stunning, intricately beaded Calla Blanche dress to an instrumental version of Edelweiss from her favourite film The Sound of Music. Incorporating a variety of personal touches into their wedding day, the couple's ceremony included a performance by the choir that Cathy has been a member of for over a decade, a guitar piece by her father during the signing of the register and her cousin, who is a trained soprano, performed a rendition of Ave Maria.
Her father also had his vintage car on display outside in the courtyard. In a touching tribute to her granny, Cathy intertwined a necklace which belonged to her into her bouquet and the pair also included photos of loved ones who had passed on a table with a remembrance candle in the ceremony space.
As Cathy is a huge Beyoncé fan, the couple asked their celebrant to slip in a joke before the ring segment of the ceremony, while the atmosphere was very serious: "There’s an old saying that Cathy in particular has always lived by... if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it..." she said, and got a great laugh. During the ceremony, the pair included the romantic poem What is a Soulmate by Emily Matthews which ended up being their favourite reading from the day.
Put a ring on it they certainly did with gorgeous wedding bands from Bespoke Diamonds. This complemented her diamond engagement ring from Voltaire Diamonds beautifully!
From the beginning of wedding planning, bride Cathy wanted the theme for the couple's special day to be fancy but fun. "We didn’t want it to be stuffy or for anyone to be under pressure or stressed. That’s exactly how it went, full of love and lots of laughs. In all the photos I’m laughing because I didn’t stop laughing all day. I think we had the perfect mix of emotion, sentimentality, but also lots and lots of fun."
How fabulous are Cathy's bridesmaids in their matching powder blue tulle gowns from Monsoon and pale pink rose bouquets?
The couple had this advice for those embarking on their own wedding planning journey: "Not to forget what the day is about, celebrating your love and having fun! Something will always go wrong but just embrace it, take in every minute of it. Try not to stress - there was a weather warning on our day and it absolutely lashed all morning, but we didn’t let it bother us. Actually the sun came out after the ceremony for our photos, so it was perfect!"
The night went on to include plenty of speeches from the bride and groom and their family members, a late night photoshoot, a sparkler exit and a sentimental first dance to Annie's Song by John Denver as performed by their excellent wedding band The Cazettes. "My granny was called Annie and she loved to waltz. Every family occasion (or sometimes just on the street!) she’d make me waltz with her. The band led us in saying it was dedicated to one of my favourite dance partners, because of its name and introduced Annie’s Song. It meant a lot to my mom and that whole side of the family. We learnt a (very basic) waltz, and halfway through I danced with my mom."
Following their wedding, the couple jetted off to New York and Paris for a well deserved honeymoon!
