Once in a blue moon, we stumble across a trailblazing groom who goes all out with his wedding-day look, walking up the aisle in crushed velvet or a bold floral. But, over the years, we've learned that most grooms are looking for a wedding suit that's stylish without being flashy. That's why, when we put together our list of the biggest 2022 trends for grooms, we made sure to select styles that grooms will actually feel comfortable and confident in. And we've found the perfect brand to partner with for this feature! The current wedding collection by Benetti Menswear is full of trend-led pieces that still manage to feel timeless. Ready to see our favourite trends? Let's go!
1. Microprints
We love an oversized pattern (more on that to come!), but miniature prints are due to have their moment in the sun in 2021 and 2022! Teeny tiny patterns add instant luxury to a groomswear look, and they're one of the most wearable trends on our list, appearing on jackets, ties, trousers, waistcoats and everything in between. The key to this look is to keep the rest of your outfit simple. For example, a microprint blazer teams beautifully with a block-colour trouser and waistcoat.
2. All-Season Tweeds
We love tweed groomswear looks for Winter, but neither the heavy fabric nor the prickly surface of a traditional tweed are pleasant to wear on a sunny Spring or Summer's day. Opt instead for a jacket or waistcoat in a textured fabric, and you can create that same rustic, high-end look that looks great in a country house-style wedding venue, but is still a dream to wear.
3. Oversized Checks
Checks are a great way to created a relaxed vibe with your wedding suit, while still looking sharp, and, these days, the bigger, the better! Oversized check prints look just as incredible in photographs as they do in the flesh, and are a foolproof choice if you're planning a laid-back, eclectic wedding.
4. Red, Wine and Burgundy
While shades of blue and grey are definitely the safest bet for grooms, a wine or burgundy suit is a surefire way to make a style statement on the big day. We've seen lots of real grooms experiment with pinks and reds recently, but a two or three-piece suit in a darker shade of wine, maroon or burgundy is easier to style with the other elements of your day. Mixing a few shades of red can work really well, too, particularly if you change up the texture, for example, by accessorising a wine suit with a red velvet bow tie!
5. A Tailored Fit
Slim-fit suits are still the most popular among grooms, and in 2022, it's going to be all about the tailored fit. We're talking about a snug yet comfortable fit that tapers slightly at the waist and ankle. The resulting look is neat, sharp, and just a little bit retro - think Don Draper in Mad Men and you're on the right track!
6. Cream, Off-White and Beige
In casualwear, Summery shades of cream, beige and stone are gaining momentum fast, so it makes sense that they would appear in groomswear, too! Suits in light, neutral shades are ideal for Summer or destination weddings, but, with the right styling, can work well in all seasons and climates. If you're not sure you can keep a light-coloured suit looking spotless for the entire day (you will, after all, be surrounded by glasses of red wine!), you can create a similar look by pairing an off-white jacket with a classic navy trouser and waistcoat.
7. Contrast buttons
A black tuxedo looks as sharp today as it did when it first appeared in the late 1800s, but if you're looking for a way to bring this classic style up to date, a contrast-button shirt is a simple way to do it. This one works particularly well if you're going for a bow tie on the big day.
8. A Statement Waistcoat
Don't stress if you're torn between following trends and playing it safe - you can do both! Try incorporating one of the trends from our list by pairing a statement waistcoat in a contrasting colour or print with a classic jacket and trousers.
9. Matching Accessories
Creating a sleek, polished look that recalls the golden era of tailoring, precise colour matching is officially back in style! Having your belt or shoes match the shade of your suit exactly was traditionally a look reserved for the super rich, who could afford to have their accessories dyed to match, but it's suddenly become achievable for modern grooms, thanks to brands like Benetti Menswear.
