While the proliferation of wedding blogs over the last couple of years has definitely helped to lift weddings from the realm of same-old to inspiring and fabulous, on the flip side it has resulted in some weddings that are styled for the sake of styling rather than truly reflecting the couple's taste and personality. It's this core of authenticity that brings true "style".
Today's wedding is a truly stylish event - Sive and Milo put so much of themselves into the day, choosing to have an intimate celebration with just 50 of their nearest and dearest, and choosing every element with care and attention. And they had the super-talented Neal and Kristi of Campbell Photography to capture their joy and love, so we are honoured to be able to share it with you...
Sive has a tremendous sense of personal style, sourcing original vintage inspiration for her own unique bridal style - creating a one of a kind look that is her and will never be another bride. She's my new bridal hero!
There are wedding dresses, and there are Wedding Gowns. Sive's wedding gown is a truly magnificent piece of craftsmanship, handmade for her from a photograph of a 1950’s Balenciaga dress by the "wonderful Ellen". I love that Sive brought a formal vintage gown bang up to date by pairing it with those wonderful lace booties from Asos. It creates a brilliant twist and give her bridal look a playful edge.
The bridesmaids dresses echo Sive's vintage vibe and were also handmade by Ellen, from a vintage vogue dress pattern found online. The bridal party have such a distinctive and unique vibe. Sive's aunt also knit a beautiful angora stole for me from an original 1950’s pattern I had found online, while she made stoles for her sisters, the bridesmaids. Although the day was so fabulous they never wore them. Lovely keepsakes to have from the day though.
Choosing the perfect venue as a backdrop for their wedding ceremony was surprisingly easy... "Belfast City Hall is a fantastic building we both really like so I called them on a whim to see if they would have availability on 29th February (leap day - more about that later), they did and the registrar I spoke with was so lovely that we never looked anywhere else." Sive is quite the DIY diva, not only making the stoles for her sisters, but also lots of little decorative touches for both the ceremony and reception. For the ceremony she made the flower paper wreaths that decorated the chairs, and also the ring cushion, and then added little touches to the room to give it a more personal feel.
So now they've tied the knot, we should go back in time and hear the love story... "My best friend, Ita and her partner Peter moved to Belfast having lived abroad for over ten years and one evening in The John Hewitt Pub, Belfast introduced us, Milo was a college friend of Peter's and while we had both visited Ita and Peter in Prague it had always been at different times and we never met. We became good friends, and regularly went out on double dates with Ita and Peter but it took us a while to go on our first date alone, about 2 years in fact! I lured Milo to Dublin with tickets for an Ireland — Scotland 6 Nations game. As soon as we got together however Milo had to move to London for work and we spent our first year together but apart, going back and forth between London, Belfast and Dublin on the weekends. I moved up to Belfast from Dublin during this year and eventually Milo returned and we have stayed here."
I proposed to Milo 4 years ago on the 29th February! (Ed: see told you it was important!)  On the evening of the 28th after he went to bed I took his car keys, snuck out to the car hung a ring from the rear view mirror, decorated the interior of the car with tiny red hearts and left a note on the dashboard ‘will you marry me?’ I could hardly sleep that night. Next morning I had to pretend nothing was going on as we had brekkie and I was just wishing he would hurry up and go to his car! Eventually he left and I stood behind the door waiting for him to come back. He rushed back in the door all excited,  full of hugs and kisses and then rushed back out again late for work and I realised he had not actually answered! I spent the day fretting in work until a huge bunch of roses arrived at 6 o’clock with a big ‘yes’ on the card……he had actually ordered them first thing, I was just last on the florist delivery list!
"When it came to the reception we knew that we wanted somewhere with great food and atmosphere. I think it was one of my work colleagues who had recently eaten in Coco suggested we take a look at it. We walked in the door and the decision was made - we loved it. Then we sat down with Tim the manager, he was so great we knew it was the right choice. Every member of staff was terrific all day long."Â So you Belfast couples know where to go if you're thinking of a restaurant venue...
I have to say I didn’t have a strict theme for my wedding, I just wanted it to look pretty and spring like and I did try and keep to a colour palette of pinks and greens. My main source of inspiration was Martha Stewart, I have always loved her craft ideas and her wedding ideas are just amazing!
The restaurant table decorations were quite simple; I used Japanese Kimono strips from ebay as table runners and then a very simple green glass vase with one stem of Freesia. On the top table I used a Japanese wedding Obi as the runner. I printed copies of the menu on the same handmade paper that I used for the invites. The table numbers, name cards and seating plan came from Confetti.co.uk and I embellished these with ribbons and a lovely fabric covered paper again from Paperchase. I also made some big pink and cream paper pom poms, which we hung up around the restaurant.
Milo plays a lot of trad music and to have a small sessuin with his friends was a must in the evening, it was a great idea, everyone loved it.
So any final words of advice, having had such a special day yourselves? "I think our wedding was so special to us because we kept it small, about 50 guests. I know this is not always possible, but it does mean that everyone you have there is someone you really want to be there, and it gave the day a really warm and intimate feeling. Also,  take dance lessons! We were able to pull off a quickstep, after our lessons with Roberta, and while we are not rushing off to become Ballroom professionals….it really impressed our family and friends as we had told no one!"
Well I'm not 100% if I can get Mr. One Fab Day to do dance lessons but will bear it in mind...
Huge thanks to Sive and Milo for sharing their beautiful day with us and providing us with a great shot in the arm style wise.
And to Neal and Kristi of Campbell Photography we are so grateful for sharing their work with us. An honour. And if you love this, then you're going to adore indulging in their work over on www.campbellphotography.co.uk so much bridal goodness to see...
