There are lots of things that set today's real wedding apart from the rest - a picnic-style reception, an epic grazing table, and a bridesman in a floral-print romper, to name just three fabulous elements! Irish bride Sarah and Australian groom Andrew planned their big day at Ballinacurra House all the way from their home in Australia, and they cleverly let their suppliers do as much of the heavy lifting as possible! Tomasz Kornas captured their truly unique wedding day in gorgeous detail, and frankly, I can't wait for you to see these photographs!
Surgeon Sarah and anaesthetist Andrew met at a medical conference in Lisbon, where they were introduced by a mutual friend. "We had both been living in Perth for a number a years but had never crossed paths," Sarah says. "We spent a lovely day having great chats by the pool, which led to dancing and a drunken snog in a nightclub later that night. When we got back to Perth, we went on our first official date and things progressed from there."
Stylist Stuart Immelman covered Ballinacurra House with multicoloured streamers for the big day, and the effect is delightfully festive!
Sarah and her bridal party started the day off with a yoga class at Ballinacurra House. This looks like so much fun!
Don't worry - we'll be talking about Sarah's ornate wedding gown further down the post!
Andrew says his favourite moment from the day was, "the ceremony itself, seeing Sarah walk down the aisle and saying our vows."
Sarah is in full agreement! "The ceremony was beautiful. I felt quite nervous before walking down the aisle, but when I saw Andy, I totally relaxed and was able to really enjoy myself."
Andrew picked a particularly exciting way to pop the question - he asked Sarah to marry him on the Routeburn Trek in Queenstown, New Zealand! "It was an extremely wet day and I was pretty cranky because my lunch was soggy from the rain," Sarah says. "The plan had been to propose at Harris Saddle, which is one of the most spectacular points on the trail, but we had difficulty getting alone time, so he ended up popping the question in the middle of an avalanche zone. I didn't know what he was up to! I obviously said yes and had a cry and then we celebrated with champagne back at the lodge that evening."
I am just in love with this vintage-inspired wedding picnic set-up! I can only assume that people who live in warm climates do a less-polished version of this every weekend.
Sarah takes us through some of the details that made up the couple's unconventional pincic-style drinks reception; "We had ribbons in the trees, hay bales and pallets used as tables, with lots of colourful rugs and flowers. There was an antipasto grazing table, which was a massive hit."
OK, I'm officially starving, and it's not even close to lunchtime!
This couple's priority was minimum faff and maximum impact. "Our brief was 'the best house party you've ever been to, with a wedding thrown in'," Sarah says. "We wanted to keep things entertaining for our guests, and keep the formalities to a minimum."
Sarah and Andrew tell us that they were beyond thrilled with how the day turned out. "Everyone always tells you to be prepared for things to go wrong, but I can honestly say that our day went perfectly. There were lots of laughs throughout the day, I've never smiled so much in my life. There were a few moments during planning that were a bit stressful, but on the whole, I really enjoyed it, even though I was doing it from overseas. I had fabulous help from the crew at Ballinacurra, especially Orela, and my stylist Stuart Immelmann. They both made my life pretty easy, to be honest."
Sarah's Anna Campbell dress is such a show-stopper. The heavy embellishment at the neckline means that it required very little accessorising - a pair of Shoes of Prey heels and she was ready to go!
You know we love a mixed-gender bridal party! And we are officially ready for the bridesman romper trend to take hold!
I love the idea of hiring a magician to entertain the guests on your big day, especially if he's as sharply-dressed as this one! Sarah tells us, "I ended up with a goldfish in a gin and tonic glass sitting on my bedside table the next morning!"
I really enjoy how this couple played around with the traditional wedding format. "For the speeches, we moved into the garden room, which had a New Orleans garden party theme, with beautiful tropical flowers and loads of gold and glamour. The dinner was served roving style, so we had lots of small plates for people to eat and they could sit wherever they liked. The food was delicious! Finally, we had a Moroccan Shisha lounge out the back for later on in the evening and we served late-night pizzas with that."
Sarah's advice for engaged couples is to, "trust your venue and trust your suppliers. In general, they are doing this day in, day out, and know exactly what works and what doesn't, so they can offer very helpful advice. The only regrets I had was when I didn't listen to them!"
Right, I'm off to buy some coloruful streamers for my back garden! But before I go, I've got to say a huge thank you to Sarah and Andrew for giving us a peep inside their big day, and to Tomasz Kornas Photography for sharing the beautiful photographs with us.
