The couple in today's real wedding weren't particularly focused on the aesthetics of their big day, but you could have fooled us! Lisa and Niall's Adare Manor wedding had a pretty, polished feel that was oh-so-elegant, but they did it with minimum faffing over the details. How? Well, we're about to find out! Get ready for generous, vintage-inspired florals, wild, romantic wedding portraits, and a bride who's serving a modern twist on Hollywood glamour, all thanks to Sean and Kate Photography, who were kind enough to share their images with us.
This gorgeous pair met when Lisa moved to New York and began sharing an apartment with one of Niall's friends from school. "After meeting a couple of times, Niall cautiously suggested dinner. We went to Death & Co., where we laughed so much we didn’t notice our food hadn’t arrived for three hours - a rare but promising sign on a first date! A hilarious second date trawling the thrift shops of the Upper East Side for Halloween costumes sealed the deal!"
Niall proposed during an epic-sounding trip to South Africa. "He had been carrying the ring around for two weeks," Lisa tells us. "Despite lots of romantic opportunities (walking with elephants! Sipping champagne at sunset in Plettenberg Bay! On top of Table Mountain!), Niall proposed on our last day during a layover in Johannesburg. We were having lunch with a friend who lives there, Cathal, and he was teasing us about getting engaged, not realising Niall had the ring in his pocket!"
Meanwhile, Niall had cooked up a plan for popping the question. "Suddenly, the whole party mobilised to go to boating, and Cathal suspiciously disappeared," Lisa remembers. "I had absolutely no idea what was coming and was so shocked and thrilled when, amidst my complaining about getting sunburned and critiquing Niall’s rowing technique, he proposed! We went back to the shore to celebrate with our cupid/third wheel Cathal!"
Lisa tells us that the couple didn't spend too much time worrying about details during the wedding planning process. "We didn’t subscribe to any look or theme. Really we just prioritised things that are important to us – good food and wine, great friends, excellent music and beautiful surroundings."
When it came time to select a venue, Adare Manor ticked all the boxes. "We wanted to have the wedding in a venue that we could stay in for a couple of days, rather than rushing in the morning of the wedding and out the next morning. Adare appealed to us because the village and church were beautiful, and the Manor was a gorgeous setting. It was closed for refurbishments when we booked so really we took a risk, but when we visited, they gave Niall some delicious cake and he was sold (it's the way to a man’s heart!)"
This romantic, oversized bouquet is the first of many gorgeous arrangements that The French Touch put together for Lisa and Niall's big day. The muted pinks and purples give it such a vintage feel!
Niall’s nephews Ben and Josh are ready for ring-bearing duty (actually, it looks like they might be a bit unimpressed to be kept waiting!)
For this couple, the most special thing about the big day was being joined by friends and family from all over the globe. "Many of our friends don’t live in Ireland, and the effort everyone made to attend – from all around Ireland, the UK, the US, South Africa, Dubai, etc – was incredible and truly appreciated."
Have you ever seen a more chuffed-looking groom in your life!? This is what it's all about, guys!
Lisa highly recommends having a laid-back rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. "If you can gather together the night before the wedding, it’s an incredibly fun way to kick off the celebrations. One of our favourite parts of the wedding was the night before, when 55 of us gathered for a rehearsal dinner in the Gallery at Adare Manor. It really felt like the party was getting started – it was a beautiful setting and everyone was excited and arriving from all over the world."
Lisa's advice to engaged couples is to "invest in a great photographer and videographer. Once the day is over, that’s all you’ve got left and we treasure the incredible photos and videos from Sean and Kate and Story of Eve."
She also suggests sticking to your guns about the elements of the day that are really important to you. "Strike a balance between pleasing people and doing what you want. Ultimately, it’s your day. Also don’t sweat the small stuff. You can tie yourself in knots about small details but ultimately people only care about a good party – great music, food and drink. And finally, do as much as you can as early as you can! It makes the last couple of weeks more enjoyable!"
Although the couple didn't want to spend too much time on the details, they loved getting friends and family members involved in the pre-wedding prep! "My Mum made the ring cushions, my talented friend Jo made the bridesmaid jewellery, and we sampled gins with friends while assembling invites!"
After the wedding, Lisa and Niall headed off on a minimoon to Ballyfin in Co. Laois. "We anticipated being exhausted after the wedding, so didn’t want to face into a long flight. Ballyfin was absolutely incredible – the seclusion, surroundings and hospitality is off the charts – and then we went to Oia in Santorini for a week. We’re planning to take a longer trip to New Zealand in January."
How adorable is flower girl Sophie!? She's the daughter of Lisa's good friend Clara, and her flower crown by The French Touch is just so sweet!
The same gorgeous roses and peonies from Lisa's bouquet were used throughout the wedding, on this elegant three-tiered wedding cake and for dining table centrepieces.
Gold cutlery and tableware creates such a luxurious look, don't you think!?
I can't cope with these two - they look so loved up! Thanks so much to Lisa and Niall for telling us all about their big day, and to Sean and Kate Photography for sharing the beautiful images with us.
