After the week we've had weather wise today's wedding will put all you soon to be Irish brides at ease, as we all know that if you plan a wedding on this somewhat soggy island of ours, there's a good chance of rain on any given day. We've shown you lots of weddings where the sun miraculously shone and against all odds, couples practically got sunburned. Today we're here to show you how one gorgeous couple made the most of their day when it started getting a little wet. Alecia and Patrick kept their cool and stayed warm and dry with the help of the team at Cahernane House Hotel. Memento Photography captured the whole celebration hail, rain or shine...
First things first, let's get to know this adorable couple! Patrick and Alecia are both from Ontario, Canada. They were introduced to each other when they were both home for the summer. They spent their first date miniature golfing and from then on were 'pretty much inseparable!'
Well, until they had to separate, that is. The two were actually living apart when Patrick popped the question...Patrick was living in Denmark, playing professional hockey for the Danish league. I came to visit in October and he surprised me with a trip to Paris. The first day in Paris we traipsed about to many different attractions. We went to the Trocadero in the evening so that Patrick could take pictures of the Eiffel Tower at sunset and in the dark when the lights come on. After an hour or so of photography, Patrick posed me for one last picture, with the Tower in the background. Rather than coming to stand beside me for the picture he got down on one knee and offered me the ring. Cleverly he also clicked the remote so we have a beautiful picture of the proposal. We spent the rest of our time in Paris with newly engaged grins on our faces. Very clever, Patrick!
For their wedding celebration, Alecia and Patrick decided to surprise their families with a destination wedding in Ireland! They quickly settled on Cahernane House Hotel as their venue, which suited them especially because they wanted their guests to be able to enjoy the beautiful Irish scenery.
You really can't go wrong with some funky socks, eh lads?
What a sweet touch, to have horse-drawn carriages for both guests and photos!
Alecia and Patrick had big plans to have their ceremony out in the garden, but Irish weather intervened. When it started to rain, their wedding planner Annie Byrne, and the coordinator from Cahernane, Michael, went to work to make the conservatory a beautiful setting for their ceremony, And it worked out perfectly...We were able to have the ceremony with the doors open to the garden, and yet stay completely dry! A win-win for everyone!
And their wedding team didn't stop there. Alecia raved about the specialty fudge the chef made for the day, and was over the moon that the Cahernane team packed up a loaf of their home made bread for her mother because she said she enjoyed it. These are the wonderful touches that make a good day, great!
Alecia and Patrick were hoping for an intimate celebration with their families, and tried to take their cues from the Irish people around them - they tried to focus on simple pleasures, eat, drink and laugh!
Alecia's head piece was hand-made in Spain and we just love its birdcage veil.
Cahernane House provided a wonderful backdrop for photos once the rain held off. We love the juxtaposition of the very old stone and the slightly more modern couple - denim jacket and all!
Of course, Patrick and Alecia were especially thankful to their families for making the journey to Ireland for their big day - and even surviving a trip to Skellig Michael, seasickness, sunburns and all!
A great piece of advice is to make sure you have a few accessories on hand that can make the rain look adorable - an umbrella that complements your attire can really make wet weather photographs look great.
Because their day was made so great by the team they had around them, Alecia and Patrick's advice to couples planning their own weddings is to find people you can trust to help... Hire vendors you can trust. We started with two key people, Annie Byrne and Derek O’Rourke and the rest fell into place. The entire team was so flexible and laid back on the day, Patrick and I, and our family were able to enjoy every moment. This is especially important for a destination wedding where you might not know where you can run out to find things or DIY a solution to a problem that crops up. Great advice, guys!
After their wedding celebration, Alecia and Patrick spent two weeks touring around Ireland before moving to Switzerland, where they've been enjoying an extended honeymoon ever since! Congratulations, Patrick and Alecia! A huge thanks to Memento Photography for capturing this sweet celebration, Memento even did a sweet wedding film of the couple that you can check out here!
