When planning their wedding, Yaili and Nicklas decided to take the party to her home country of Portugal for a beautiful celebration at a farm overlooking vineyards and olive trees. They put together their two cultures and traditions to create one gorgeous and meaningful day for themselves and their guests. Tim and Claire of This Modern Love photography made the journey and have lots of sun-filled photographs to share today.
Yaili gave us the scoop on how she and Nicklas met...We are both web designers; we hang at the same conferences, know the same people, so eventually we met. It wasn’t love at first sight in any way whatsoever — it took a few times, a few meet ups and a few G&Ts! But once when we finally got to know each other better everything happened very naturally, very quickly, with no games being played, no dramas, and here we are!
When it came time to plan their big day, Yaili and Nicklas chose her home country of Portugal. They were looking for a comfortable vibe for their guests and a place they could mix their two cultures, Nicklas is from Sweden...We wanted a bucolic vibe, nothing sophisticated or chic that could make some guests feel uncomfortable. We wanted it to be about enjoying the great location, the nice food and the booze, and about having a fun night dancing to cheesy tunes — hopefully with some sun added to the mix. That sounds like a lovely recipe for a wedding day!
The couple chose Casa Viscondes da Várzea, in Lamego, Portugal, for their ceremony and reception. The farm had a lot to offer, including traditional Portuguese dishes to serve their guests, seasonal flowers, and white table cloths and crockery. Yaili explained they didn't have to do much decorating..the location was so beautiful that a lot of the decoration was already done for us.
The color palette was a mix of blues and yellows, a nod to Nicklas' home country of Sweden. What a lovely way to include both countries in the day!
Yaili found her Justin Alexander dress at Angel Star Bridal in Carrickfergus. The overlaid lace adds a beautiful texture to the dress.
You just know it's going to be a great wedding when there's mustache wax involved!
We love the bright yellow socks!
Yaili said the venue had a few perfect attributes they couldn't turn down..The spectacular view, the unusual buildings and decoration, rooms for all the guests to stay in for a couple of nights, and staff that could speak English! Certainly a great list for a destination wedding!
Yaili decided to pair her lacy dress with a simple bun - so elegant.
These stunning images from This Modern Love are so timeless - these portraits of Yaili and Nicklas could have been taken a hundred years ago! Aren't they a gorgeous couple?
Yaili and Nicklas designed the stationery themselves, and the little illustrations are another nod to their respective countries. Aren't they so sweet?
For such a grand space, the simple table decor of white and yellow flowers, and blue table numbers, is perfectly understated.
The couple put their guests to work before dinner making origami cranes and pelicans from funky patterned paper!
Yaili and Nicklas decided to hire a traditional Portuguese band, called a fado band, for the reception...Our main extravagance was hiring a fado band, we knew the Portuguese guests would love that touch and the guests that came from abroad could remember that new experience.
Yaili's uncle created the beautiful illustrations as wedding favours. What a nice idea to send guests home with a beautiful piece of bespoke artwork.
The two set up a table at their reception where guests could leave messages for the couple. Yaili says, It was really nice to read them and remember our big day.
Yaili has some great advice for brides planning their own weddings. Make lists, so you don’t forget anything. Make sure guests know what’s happening next on the day, when they’ll eat next, etc. And, even though it’s very nice to see weddings that are planned to the tiniest detail, don’t let that get in the way of enjoying your day and enjoying the planning process: most details will go unnoticed to everyone else. So true, Yaili!
For their honeymoon, Iniyaili and Nicklas hopped over the ocean for a tour of Panama, where the bride's father is from. They visited with friends and family and also took time for themselves. Thanks for sharing your special day, Yaili and Nicklas. And thanks to the folks at This Modern Love for sharing the beautiful images of the day.
