The couple in today's real wedding are too frickin' sweet! Hazel and Brian grew up in the same town, but had never spoken until Brian plucked up the courage to drop her a cheesy chat-up line on Bebo, and Hazel was brave enough to ask him to the cinema. Eight years, 400 movie dates and a surprise cinema trailer proposal later, and this pair tied the knot with a fun party at Horetown House laced with homages to their favourite films. The celebration was documented so beautifully by Remain in Light, and we have a feeling this one is about to brighten up your day - and we're not just talking about Brian's fab red suit!
Hazel and Brian both grew up in the same town but never knew each other, “That was until one night in our local nightclub, the Foundry, we locked eyes but we didn’t speak to each other,” Hazel explains.
Brian says he was far too shy to make a move, “But somehow, I was able to track her down on Bebo when I got home. My brother and I decided that I should send her a message. Obviously, our best bet would be to send her a chat up line. So, onto Google we went, typed in "funny chat up lines", a list popped up and we cried laughing at the results of what we could send. We copied one and pasted it to Hazel's wall on Bebo and hit enter. The message was sent, and it simply read "Here I am... What are your other two wishes?”.” A big cringey, but effective!
Hazel responded a (long!) day later asking Brian if he was drunk, “I explained I didn't drink and that someone must have jokingly sent the message on my behalf. Lucky Hazel laughed at this and from there we continued to chat. After what seemed like a long time chatting online Hazel asked me when I was going to take her out. Thank God she did this because I was too shy at the time and was glad to have her pushing me.”
Eventually went on their first date to the cinema to see Evan Almighty “We hit it off immediately,” says Hazel. “Since then we have been together for 10 years and have kept every single cinema ticket of every movie we have been too. We have a ticket collection of over 400 films which we displayed on our wedding day.”
For Hazel and Brian, their big day really was everything they’d hoped for, “I know it might sound cliché but our wedding really was the best day of our lives. We had the perfect venue, the perfect weather, the perfect music, the perfect photographers and cinematographers, everything was just perfect!
Friends and family provided the music for the the church, “The music was so beautiful and really added to the atmosphere and gave it a very special feeling. Hazel walked down the aisle to Tom Odell’s ‘Real Love’ which featured in the proposal trailer.”
Brian always filmed footage of everything he and Hazel did, and finally, after eight years, he put it all to good use. “The year that I proposed I started editing all of the footage I had filmed into a movie trailer. I had to edit this trailer in secret for about six months,” Brian explains. “Once the trailer was completed, I booked a private screening in our local cinema where I pretended we were going to see a normal film. This ‘private screening’ was disguised as a Christmas present from my sister so as not to get her suspicious. What she didn't know is that I placed this trailer in amongst the normal trailers. She had no idea this was going to happen and got such a surprise.”
Hazel tells us she no clue what was about to happen, “He kept me in the dark right up until about a minute into the proposal trailer, with a sneaky “have you not seen this trailer yet?”. It was not until the title of our first Bebo photo album ’Duck date in Kilkenny’ came up on the screen that I realised what was happening.”
Such a stylish group! We're pretty obsessed with Brian's bold red suit, and Hazel is just gorgeous in her dress with its embellished bodice and soft tulle skirt. The wedding party tie in beautifully in navy.
The couple wanted their day to feel authentically them, “It just felt like with all of these little touches our wedding became very personal and gave our family and friends a good insight into our relationship. From what we could tell and have heard back it seemed like everyone had a really good time and the overall vibe of the day was just fun.”
The couple rented a Morris Minor as our wedding car but decided not to hire a driver, “We had about an hour drive from the church to the venue and wanted to enjoy that time to ourselves. This was one of the nicest parts of the day. As a newly married couple we got to spend and hour alone chatting about everything. It was such a precious time that not everyone gets on their wedding day.,” explains Brian. “Also, the bride drove. Hazel does all of the driving in the relationship so why should it be any different on the day!”
The marquee at Horetown House looking fabulous with the statement lanterns handing overhead.
Brian and Hazel know their venue was ‘the one’ the moment they saw it, “It was actually the only venue that we looked at. Once we saw it we knew no other venue would compare and we booked it immediately.
The couple had a slight movie theme running throughout the day, “Seeing as the cinema has been such a big part of our relationship from our first date to our proposal. We spent months before hand creating fake movie posters of our adventures and photoshopped our faces onto movie posters as our table plans.”
A viral video which the couple made about jumping through every county in Ireland - it's well worth a watch!
How cool are these movie posters which the bride and groom imposted their faces on - such a clever idea!
Hazel and Brian tell us what made Horetown House so special, “We were looking for a marquee and Horetown House had one built inside that can be used all year round. It had everything that we wanted from the look, the feel, the food, the extremely nice and helpful staff. The venue really was everything we could have wanted and more. You couldn’t find nicer people than the people at Horetown House. They went above and beyond to ensure that all our wedding dreams came through.”
One of the main priorities for these movie lovers was finding the right photographers and cinematographers to document their day, “As Brian is a TV editor he always wanted to edit our wedding video so we spent a lot of time researching these elements and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the results on the day,” explains Hazel, “You won’t find better than Remain in Light and Cinematictide for your wedding.”
The couple say their main advice is probably much like many other couples’ “Try not to get stressed in the months leading up to it and enjoy the planning and preparations because it can be a stressful if you let it. We loved all of the little personal details that we put into our wedding but everything would still be fine without them. It really is one of the best days of your lives so give yourself time to enjoy the experience and take it all in.”
In keeping with the movie theme Brian made yet another secret video, this time it was for his speech. “I had filmed even more footage since the proposal and got the idea that I should make my speech a video. So, I filmed myself talking to the camera and in secret once again edited a speech video over several months.”
He even went on secret trips to Horetown House and set up a projector and make sure everything worked right, “I was so nervous on the day that something would go wrong with the video or that Hazel would find out but I managed to keep it surprise. Once again Hazel was so shocked and genuinely seemed like she had no idea. I love surprising her like that!”
There was even a movie-themed snack table - these two thought of everything!
The couple had some well-deserved R&R after the wedding, “We went on a minimoon to the Monart Spa. We are planning on going on our honeymoon in July on a month-long trip around Europe. We are going to rent a car for the journey and yes, the bride will be in the driving seat again!”
Such a cool wedding! Thank you so so much to Hazel and Brian for sharing your wonderful day with us, and of course to Remain in Light for sending it our way.
